A photographic element having a silver halide emulsion spectrally sensitized to blue light by a dye of formula (I) to have a maximum blue sensitivity at less than 485 nm. The dye allows the element to have good color reproduction while still providing good speed response despite the shorter blue sensitivity. A silver halide photographic material comprises a red sensitive layer which contains a high chloride emulsion sensitized with at least two red sensitizing dyes. By adjusting the relative amounts of the two dyes the heat sensitivity of the red layer can be adjusted to match that of the blue sensitive and green sensitive layers to maintain color balance despite thermal fluctuations.
