A mirror assembly especially designed for commercial vehicles including a support arm, a mirror head pivotally affixed to the support arm by first and second hinges having a pivot axis. The axes extend horizontally and transverse to the direction of vehicle travel. The first hinge allows a pivoting of the mirror head about its pivot axis only in a first direction A and the second hinge permits a pivoting of the mirror head only in a second direction B which is opposite to the direction A. By this means, it is possible that the two hinges can be simple and rugged in construction.

A mirror assembly system for use in automotive vehicles is provided. In one embodiment of the presented invention, a first connecting member has the form of a tubular flange member, with a first contact surface and a first groove being provided inside the flange member. A second connecting member is adapted to be introduced with play into the tubular flange member, with the second connecting member comprising a base body. On the base body a first retaining boss for engagement in the first groove and a guide surface arranged behind the retaining boss are provided, with the guide surface being associated to the first contact surface. A clamping device passes through the flange member and, when actuated, presses against a first pressure surface on the base body so that the inclined guide surface presses against the first contact surface, to thus jam the mounting member inside the flange member.

A bearing apparatus for pivotally moving a carrying arm relative to an anchorage is provided. The carrying arm may carry a mirror for a vehicle, the anchorage mountable to the vehicle. The bearing apparatus has a bushing located between the carrying arm and the anchorage in which a pivot bearing apparatus is moveably disposed. In one embodiment the pivot bearing apparatus has a control component and a come-along part relationally disposed about a shaft and movably connected to the control component. When the shaft is rotated, the come-along part moves along the shaft to rotate the control component. In turn, the control component transfers its rotation to pivot the carrying arm.

The mirror arrangement comprises a mirror foot adapted for permanent attachment to an associated commercial vehicle and a mirror head attached to the mirror foot. The assembly includes a bearing arm including a bearing arm segment having a proximal end securable to the vehicle and a distal end extending from the proximal end. The bearing arm also includes a holding rod for supporting a rearview mirror housing. An articulation is secured to the distal end of the bearing arm segment and to a pivot end of the holding rod, the articulation pivotally joining the bearing arm segment and the holding rod. The articulation defines a swivel axis extending substantially horizontally in a direction substantially at a right angle to a direction of travel of the vehicle when the bearing arm is in a use position. The articulation is disposable adjacent a side of the vehicle when the bearing arm is in a use position so that the holding rod may pivot about the swivel axis in a plane extending in a direction substantially parallel to a direction of travel of the vehicle. The holding rod is pivotable upward to a position higher than a top boundary of a safety zone adjacent the vehicle.

A rearview mirror system includes components that can be used on both the left and right side of a vehicle. Only one carrier plate need be used to mount the mirrors. By changing mounting procedure on the two identical carrier plates, one carrier plate may be used for both the right and left mirrors, thereby reducing the number of components. A wedge-shaped transition piece may be used to provide the asymmetric mounting to thereby allow for mounting on the right and left sides of vehicles.
