摘要: According to an embodiment, there is provided a 3D image display apparatus provided with a display unit and a control element arranged to oppose the display unit. The control element has a number of optical apertures linearly extended and tilted at an angle θ with respect to a linearly extending direction. The sub-pixel have one of first and second patterns defined by an aperture and a light-shielding portion. The sub-pixels of an identical color are arrayed to alternately have the first and second patterns or the second and first patterns along the second direction, and the sub-pixels are arrayed so as to mutually give at least one of no line-symmetry relationship and no point-symmetry relationship.

The image display unit includes a display unit stacked with the liquid crystal optical apparatus. The control unit controls a potential of electrodes provided in the liquid crystal optical apparatus. Light including kth (k being an integer) major region parallax image is emitted outside the liquid crystal optical apparatus through a lens center portion. Light including kth adjacent region parallax image is emitted outside the liquid crystal optical apparatus through a refractive index increase portion.

The distance along the second direction between the central axis and a first separating region between the first opposing electrode and the second opposing electrode is longer than a distance between the central axis and the second electrode.

The image display unit emits image light having a polarizing axis. The liquid crystal optical apparatus includes first and second substrate units and a liquid crystal layer. An angle between the polarizing axis and a second direction perpendicular to the first direction is greater than 0 degrees and less than 90 degrees. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first and second substrate units. An angle between a long-axis direction of the liquid crystal and the polarizing axis is greater than 0 degrees and less than the angle between the polarizing axis and the second direction.

The liquid crystal lens device includes a liquid crystal optical element unit. The liquid crystal layer has an alignment twisted by an angle not less than 5 degrees and not more than 45 degrees along a normal axis of a major surface of the first substrate unit. The image display unit includes a display unit. The second substrate unit is disposed between the first substrate unit and the display unit.
