Systems and methods for template matching of multicolored images provide an image conversion process that respectively views two, three or four input color planes through an input observation window. Single plane vectors are obtained that represent the color planes. The obtained single plane vectors are combined into a multi-plane vector that may be used in a look-up table for descreening or resolution enhancement, for example. Various interactions between color planes may be taken into account to provide optimum color space conversion. Additional information obtained by using the multi-plane vector allow performance of image processes with optimized accurate color values.

Each of the N-1 filters is used to produce the slices, where N is the number of possible gray-scale levels desired in the output image. Once the slices are generated, the resulting binary image data therein is recombined, by adding or stacking, to produce the desired multiple-bit per pixel output.

An adaptive image enhancement filter includes a template matching module for comparing an observed pixel pattern comprising a target pixel and one or more neighboring pixels to a set of templates to determine if the observed pixel pattern matches any of the templates. The template matching module generates a match identifier signal indicating which of the templates, if any, the observed pixel pattern is found to match. Based on this match identifier, a signal generation module provides an enhanced output signal for the target pixel. The template matching and/or the signal generation modules can be independently modified to adapt to changing conditions as identified by signals identifying image attributes and marking process attributes.

An intended raster output level, which corresponds to the POI, is received into a processing device. A final raster input level is determined as a function of the image position and the intended raster output level. The final input level and the image position are transmitted to an output device. An actual raster output level is rendered, via the output device, at a position on an output medium corresponding to the image position. The actual raster output level substantially matches the intended raster output level.

Error is distributed to pixels neighboring a pixel of interest based on a ranking of the neighboring pixels. The ranking is based on pixel values of the neighboring pixels. Optionally a spatial weighting is applied to the pixel values before ranking, to provide a preference for pixels closest to the pixel of interest or to a particular portion of a related halftone screen. Rank order based error diffusion provides compact halftone dots without patterning artifacts. An image processing system operative to perform rank order error diffusion includes a pixel ranker and an error diffuser. In a xerographic environment the image processing system includes a xerographic printer.
