    摘要: A process is described for the preparation of a compound of formula (2) ##STR1## (wherein R is a C.sub.1-6 alkyl or a C.sub.7-20 aralkyl group) and the salts thereof, which comprises reducing a compound of formula (3) ##STR2## (or a salt thereof), using a reducing system comprising borohydride ions and metal ions selected from lanthanide ions, alkaline earth metal ions or yttrium ions in solution. The reduction system may be provided by a borohydride (e.g. NaBH.sub.4) and a metal salt (e.g. CeCl.sub.3).The ester (2) may then if desired be hydrolyzed to give the parent acid.

    摘要: A hazard detector has an electronic circuit with a start-up program for causing emission of a local indicator signal, such as a flashing signal from a LED, if power and ground terminals of the detector are connected with proper orientation, i.e. polarity, to power and ground lines of a power supply. Through this means, a person installing the hazard detector can tell immediately after connection if the detector has been connected with proper orientation, and avoids the need for introducing a hazard such as heat or smoke to test the operation of the detector. A variation uses a more sophisticated program that disables, during a test mode, complex filtering algorithms that are used by detectors to block false alarm signals; if such filtering is not disabled, impedes normal testing of the detectors.

    摘要: A flame detector arranged to detect flames includes a non-microphonic infra-red sensor having a broad band frequency response. To maximize the sensitivity to radiation from flames in the 4.3 .mu.m solar absorption band a narrow band optical interference filer, transmissive in the band 4.54 .mu.m to 4.38 .mu.m is chosen such that the integrated solar energy transmitted thereby is less than an alarm threshold.A further filter prevents re-radiated heat from the filter reaching the sensor. Another filter prevents radiation of wavelengths less than 4.38 .mu.m from reaching the other filters to reduce heating thereof and also to provide a series of filters to stop direct broad band transmission to the sensor through pin holes in the filters. A signal processor detects flames by virtue of the flame flicker frequencies and includes provision for compensating for the effects of low frequency components on the amplitude of radiation produced by flames.
