摘要: A method for separating long, unwound items like fiber, fiber strands, yarn, etc. having a liquid chemical sizing on the surfaces into short lengths by chopping is disclosed.Improved chopping life is achieved by using blades, or at least blade edges of cemented tungsten carbide, and selecting the liquid chemical sizings having a pH of about 7 or greater to apply to the surfaces of the items being chopped. Also disclosed are blades having at least the sharp edges of the chopping blades coated with various materials including a material selected from a group consisting of tungsten carbide, titanium nitride, diamond like carbon, polycrystalline diamond, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride, cemented tungsten carbide, or mixture of two or more of these materials. These coated blades can be used to separate items having both neutral, basic and acidic sizings thereon

摘要: A chopper for chopping items such as fibers, fiber strands, ribbon, etc. by passing the items continuously in a loose, unwound, condition through the nip of a blade roll and a backup roll having a working layer on its outer periphery. The chopper of the present invention uses one or more rolls that are radially expandable and retractable to replace the blade roll and/or the backup roll on the prior art choppers so that worn blades and/or a worn working layer can be more quickly and more easily replaced with a new or repaired working layer or blade holder containing sharp blades. The chopper of the present invention eliminates the need to carry large, heavy, awkward rolls through the fiber forming rooms or areas where the items are being chopped and also to transport such rolls back and forth to the location where they are being rebuilt. Instead only lightweight working layers or blade holders are carried to and from the choppers and such are installed on the choppers with much reduced downtime than heretofore necessary.

摘要: A chopper for chopping fibers or fiber strands having a back up roll and a blade roll containing blades that work against a peripheral surface of the back up roll and a method of using is disclosed. The chopper has a number of improved features for reducing the frequency of long fibers or long fiber strands and fuzz from getting into the chopped product. The chopper can have one or any combination of the improvements. The improvements include a strand guide located at least two feet up stream of the chopper, a first starting roll for starting a new strand that runs on a fluid bearing that can be adjusted to control the RPM of the first starting roll, a mount for a roll that runs against the peripheral surface of said back up roll, a strand guide insert for reducing fuzz generation and for preventing fuzz from getting into the product, and a deflector plate for catching and deflecting chopped strands thrown off the back up roll into a chopped strand product chute.

摘要: A fiberizing apparatus for converting molten material into continuous fibers having an improved internal support structure to minimize high temperature creep and sagging of the tip plate or orifice plate is disclosed. The preferred internal support structure is welded to the sidewalls and the top surface of the tip plate and is comprised of a plurality of internal intersecting supports that form a diamond shaped structure. A method of fiberizing a molten material using the fiberizing apparatus is also disclosed.

摘要: This invention involves apparatus and methods for making fibers by passing a molten material like glass, polymer, etc. through orifices or tips in a fiberizing bushing and then cooling the molten material coming from the tips and newly formed fibers using cooling tubes. The cooling tubes are made from precious metals and various alloys comprising precious metals, nickel and one or more of titanium, chromium, molybdenum, etc. The one or more fins attached to the top surface of a hollow tube to make the cooling tubes contain spaced apart gaps, notches and/or slots extending from the top edge of the fin to prevent warping of the fins and to make the cooling tube more bendable, adjustable during the operation of making fibers from molten material.

摘要: Disclosed are fiber coating sizing applicator apparatus having a member to remove unused sizing and foreign objects from the fiber coating element of the applicator on a continuous or intermittent basis. Also disclosed are sizing applicators having as part of the drive, a servo motor for reduced variation in sizing application. Unused sizing is filtered to remove foreign objects and returned the applicator right away, or stored in a temperature controlled area until ready to feed back to a sizing applicator. Also disclosed are methods of using the sizing applicator apparatus to produce sized fibers. The apparatus and methods of the invention produce a substantial reduction in the fiber break rate, sizing usage and applicator maintenance.

摘要: A bushing for fiberizing molten material, such as molten glass, having a screen mounted in the bushing spaced above the tip or orifice plate with a central portion of the screen having a significantly lower percent of hole area than the percent of hole area in end portions of the screen. This bushing improves fiberizing efficiency in channel positions of a fiberizing operation. Also, such a screen can be laid on top of a conventional screen to convert a normal bushing to a channel position bushing. Methods of using these types of bushings to improve fiberization in the channel positions and for modifying conventional bushings for other uses are also disclosed.

摘要: A method and apparatus for chopping long unwound items like fiber, fiber strands, yarn, etc. The chopper has a backup roll comprising a wheel and a working layer on the outer peripheral surface of the wheel and an engaging blade roll. The outer peripheral surface of the wheel contains spiral grooves or ridges that mate with ridges or grooves on an inner peripheral surface of the working layer such that a worn working surface can be quickly and easily unscrewed from the wheel and a new working surface can be quickly and easily screwed into place, making the job of replacing the working surface faster, easier and less costly than prior art practice.
