A process for purifying crude soluble ribonucleic acid comprises mixing a soluble chloride and dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl acetamide or dimethyl formamide with an aqueous solution of the crude RNA, the organic solvent being present in an amount of 33 to 45% by volume of the mixture, separating the clear phase formed, and recovering purified soluble RNA therefrom. The chloride may be that of sodium, potassium, ammonium or magnesium. The crude RNA may be obtained from cultures of yeast or from cultures of Escherichia coli by adding phenol to disrupt the cells; other sources mentioned are other bacteria seeds, and rat liver.
