    Abstract: A communication system comprises a network configured to support data, voice, and video communications and a docking station coupled to the network and configured to provide data connections to a personal computer wireless device, wherein the personal computer wireless device is configured to communicate with the docking station using light communication. A method for accessing the communication system comprises connecting a personal computer wireless device to a docking station using light communication and identifying a current location of the personal computer wireless device based upon LC with the docking station or an LC access point. One or more selected applications may be enabled or disabled on the personal computer wireless device based upon the current location.

    Abstract: Sponsorship of controlled-environment facility resident media and/or communications devices by non-residents may include associating a non-resident with an address identifier of a sponsored resident media and/or communications device and associating a controlled-environment facility resident identified by the non-resident with the address identifier of the sponsored device. Thereafter, inbound calls to the sponsored device are connected as a result of confirming that an inbound calling party is associated with the address identifier of the sponsored device and verifying that the resident operating the sponsored device is associated with the address identifier of the sponsored device. Revocation of sponsorship of the sponsored device removes or deactivates association of the non-resident with the address identifier of the sponsored device and removes or deactivates association of the controlled-environment facility resident with the address identifier of the sponsored media and/or communications device.

    Abstract: An infrared image and/or a video of one or more residents of a controlled-environment facility is captured using an imaging device of a controlled-environment facility resident communication and/or media device disposed within the controlled-environment facility when the device is not being used in a communication session. The imaging device of the controlled-environment facility resident communication and/or media device is capable of operation with an infrared light source. The infrared image or video may be stored and/or presented to an entity associated with the controlled-environment facility, such as personnel of the facility, a facility administration system, etc. Capturing the image may include turning on at least one infrared light source on the device and/or turning off any indication that the capturing is taking place. The device may be located in a resident sleeping area and a bed check may be performed by the entity or device, using the infrared image.

    Abstract: Images of residents of a controlled-environment facility may be captured at the time of intake into the facility. A feature detection process may be performed on each image to verify that corporeal facial features are present in each resident image and a copy of such an image of each resident may be saved. A request to initiate an electronic visitation session may be received and an image of a user is captured. A feature detection process is performed on the captured image to verify that images of features of a corporeal human face are present in the captured image, determining whether an image of a corporeal human face is present in the captured image. The electronic visitation session may then be connected in response to a determination that an image of a corporeal human face is present. Further, a facial recognition process may also be performed on the captured image.

    Abstract: A communication system comprises a processing system configured to support data, voice and video communications. A docking station is coupled to the processing system and is configured to provide power and data connections to a personal computer wireless device. The personal computer wireless device is configured to provide power, data, and analog connections. The docking station includes a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone, such as a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), phone. The docking station may include a keypad configured to initiate, or otherwise enable, VoIP phone call functions. The docking station is coupled to the processing system over at least one pair of low-voltage wires having an electrical current sufficient to power the personal computer wireless device. The pair(s) of low-voltage wires may provide sufficient electrical current to charge a battery in the personal computer wireless device.

    Abstract: A controlled-environment facility local or remote content server downloads and caches a digital media file and determines whether a resident of the facility is allowed access to the digital media file. This determination may be made by the content server accessing a controlled-environment facility administration system. In response to a determination that the resident is allowed access, the digital media file is streamed and/or downloaded, from the content server, within a portion of the facility, to a controlled-environment facility resident media device adapted and/or approved for use by residents of the controlled-environment facility and disposed within the aforementioned portion of the facility. The streaming and/or downloading may be carried out, at least in part, via a wireless access point disposed within the portion of the controlled-environment facility to provide access by the resident media device disposed within the portion of the controlled-environment facility.

    Abstract: Systems and methods, which can provide for an indication of a privileged communication, are provided. A method, according to an embodiment, uses at least one processor of a communication server device. Addressee information of one or more addressee(s) of a communication, sender information of a sender of the communication, or a combination thereof is received. The sender information, the addressee information, or a combination thereof is compared to registered user information maintained in a database. The registered user information corresponds to registered users to or from whom privileged communications may be sent or received. An indication that the communication is privileged is provided when the sender information, the addressee information, or the combination thereof corresponds to respective registered user information maintained in the database.
