It is requested to deliver items by concealing private information about a sender and a recipient without installing a database for storing information which requires strict management. A recipient's terminal apparatus obtains a delivery agency's public key from a delivery agent server apparatus. An encryption program of the delivery agency is downloaded in advance and uses the public key to encrypt recipient information containing at least recipient's private information needed for delivery of items. The recipient's encryption information is transmitted to a sender's terminal apparatus. The sender's terminal apparatus outputs the recipient's encryption information to be attached to an item entrusted to the delivery agency. A cryptogram reader of the delivery agency decrypts the output recipient's encryption information using the delivery agency's secret key. The delivery agency obtains the information about delivery destination of the recipient.

A contents provider stores contents data in a container in a format which can only be decoded with a key distributed from an EMD service center, and transmits the container to a service provider. The service provider adds pricing information and the like and distributes this to a user home network. The user home network pays charges to the EMD service center based on the pricing information, receives the key, and decodes the contents data. Information regarding the number of times which copying is permitted is contained in the secure container, and the number of times permitted is increased each time charges are paid, thereby enabling copying to other media and the like. It is impossible to make copies from a container simply copied, or in cases where in the number of permitted times of copies has been used up. Thus, contents data can be distributed in a format wherein copying of contents data can be controlled including the number of copies made.

A personal identification apparatus is disclosed by which personal identification can be performed making use of an impulse response obtained from a pulse signal transmitted by a living organism. A pulse generation section generates a pulse, and a speaker applies the pulse amplified by an amplifier to a finger of a user touching with the speaker and a microphone. The pulse signal is transmitted to the microphone with an attenuation characteristic that depends upon, for example, a transmission distance that depends upon the length and the thickness of the finger and characteristics of the living organism such as the thickness of the flesh and the bone density. A data synthesis processing section synthesizes the pulse and an impulse received by the microphone and amplified by an amplifier. A template recording section records a template to be used as a reference of discrimination in an authentication process together with a user ID and so forth. A comparison discrimination processing section refers to the template recording section to discriminate whether or not an impulse response inputted from a memory coincides with one of templates of registered users.
