Abstract: A system and method for retrieving uniform resource locators from television content includes a television that receives a broadcast signal. The broadcast signal includes embedded URL information. Moreover, the television includes a remote control unit that has a memory slot that is sized and shaped to receive a portable memory media. In response to a signal received at the television, e.g., from the remote control unit, the embedded URL is extracted from the broadcast signal and downloaded to the remote control unit. To facilitate Internet use, the downloaded URL can be transmitted to an Internet device, e.g., a computer or a personal digital assistant where it can be used to access information associated with Web sites linked to the URLs.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for providing an evaluation of a plurality of information sites to a user over a packet-switched network when the user submits a search request through a user interface device in communication with the packet-switched network. The method begins by acquiring a search result, responsive to the search request, which includes network addresses for the plurality of information sites. Next, a plurality of individuals are selected who were previously in communication with at least one of the information sites over the packet-switched network and who meet at least one predefined criterion selected by the user. A plurality of evaluations of at least one of the information sites is retrieved from a database, which are provided by the plurality of individuals. Finally, a rating based on the evaluations is forwarded to the user over the packet-switched network.

Abstract: A customer maintains an Electronic Information Account (EIA) on a data storage device, such as on a portable electronic device (e.g., personal digital assistant) or on a nonvolatile memory device (e.g., smart card, memory stick). On the storage device, the EIA includes a customer profile and transaction records for later reference and for selective electronic communication to merchants and sources of goods or services for purposes of speeding a transaction, suggesting future purchases based on prior transactions, confirming product warranty registration, and limiting transactions for subordinate customers. Comprehensive capturing of transaction records is provided by synchronizing the data stored on the customer data storage device and on a remotely stored duplicate customer profile and database of transaction records.
