THIS SPECIFICATION DESCRIBES A HYDRODYNAMIC TORQUE CONVERTER IN WHICH A RING OF PUMP BLADES, A RING OF GUIDE BLADES AND AT LEAST TWO RINGS OF TURBINE BLADES ARE MOUNTED IN A TOROIDAL WORKING CHAMBER. THE INVENTION ENABLES DIFFERENT INPUT TORQUE CHARACTERISTICS TO BE TURBINE RING VARYING THE OUTLET ANGLES OF THE BLACES OF A TURBINE RING DISPOSED TO IMMEDIATELY PRECEDE THE RING OF PUMP BLADES. THE OUTLETS OF THE SAID TURBINE BLADES DIRECT THE FLUID TO THE INLET OF THE PUMP BLADES AND, FOR A LOW INPUT TORQUE RATIO, THE OUTLET ANGLE OF THE SAID TURBINE BLADES IS SUCH THAT THE FLUID IS ALWAYS DIRECTED IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE DIRECTION OF ROTATION OF THE RING OF PUMP BLADES.

This invention relates to a vehicle transmission, including a torque converter, which is capable of producing gentle shifts between different gear ratios. This is attained by releasing one of the bladed components in the torque converter during a gear shift. In more detail, a torque converter is of the rotating casing type and the transmission includes a two speed gear having a holding clutch which may take either of two positions, viz. high and low, and the releasable bladed component is automatically released from the rotating casing when a holding clutch is changed from one position to another. The releasable bladed component may be the pump component or the turbine component of the torque converter.

A hydrodynamic torque converter having a rotating casing enclosing a work chamber which includes a turbine member, a reaction member and a pump member. At least one of the turbine member or a radial extension of the turbine output shaft but preferably the turbine member, is movable axially for engagement or disengagement with the other to thereby engage the turbine member to or release it from the turbine shaft. The turbine shaft extension may further engage the rotating casing for direct drive. Movement of the turbine member and/or the turbine shaft extension between the various operating positions is brought about by means of pressure differentials across these members, which members thereby serve as servo-piston elements.

A forward/reverse gear transmission of the planet gear type including input and output members and a planet gear carrier and constructed to provide forward, reverse and release operation. The gear comprises a first, second and third coupling of which the first serves to connect and disconnect the input member and a driving source, the second serves to connect and disconnect the input and output members and the third clutch serves to selectively hold the planet gear carrier against rotation. The gear also includes a control means for allowing engagement of the first coupling only when the second clutch effects drive between the input and output members or when the third coupling holds the planet gear against rotation. Moreover, the gear includes means for controlling engagement of said second and third couplings so that only one of said couplings is engaged at any one time.

The contacting surfaces of the sealing ring with the outer part and the groove constitute sealing surfaces and at least one of these sealing surfaces is porous and made of material having a low coefficient of friction. The porous and low coefficient of friction material may comprise a layer on either the outer part or the sealing ring or the sealing ring may be made of such material. An example of such a material is molybdenum.
