A method for sending forward error correction (FEC) configuration information by a sending apparatus in a multimedia system is provided. The method includes sending source FEC configuration information for an FEC source packet to a receiving apparatus, wherein the source FEC configuration information includes information related to an FEC source or repair packet that is sent first among at least one FEC source or repair packet if an FEC source or repair packet block includes the at least one FEC source or repair packet.

A transmitting apparatus and an operating method for the apparatus in a multimedia system are provided. The operating method includes inputting at least one network layer packet, generating a link layer packet based on the at least one network layer packet, and transmitting the link layer packet. The link layer packet includes a header including information indicating a packet type of the at least one network layer packet, information indicating whether the link layer packet includes a single network layer packet, and information indicating an identifier related to the at least one network layer packet.

The present invention provides a method for transmitting a frame in a communication system that generates layer 2 (L2) signalling information related to an L2 service, that checks whether a baseband frame (BBF) exists that is divided from BBFs forming a frame and respectively included in the frame and other frames, that constitutes the frame such that a baseband packet (BBP) corresponding to the first BBF of the BBFs includes the L2 signalling information if there is no BBF included in the respective frame and the other frames, and that transmits the same.

The present invention relates to a method for transmitting a packet in a communication system, the method comprising: generating drop information indicating at least one source packet to be dropped among source packets to be transmitted and whether or not to drop each of the other source packets except the at least one source packet; performing forward error correction (FEC) encoding on the drop information and the other source packets except the at least one source packet; generating a repair packet comprising repair data for restoring the drop information and a repair symbol for restoring the other source packets except the at least one source packet; and transmitting the other source packets except the at least one source packet and the repair packet.

A method for transmitting a packet for N data streams in a communication system is provided. The method includes dividing each of the data streams into data payloads and adding a header for discriminating between the N data streams to each of the data payloads, determining, from the source packet flow, an FEC source formed by source packets generated from an (N−M) number of data streams, distinguishing at least one source packet block, generating a source symbol block from the at least one distinguished source packet block, generating a repair symbol block formed by at least one repair symbol, determining a repair flow ID for identifying a repair flow formed by the repair symbols generated from the FEC source packet flow, generating an FEC repair packet by adding a header to each of the repair symbols of the repair flow, and transmitting the source packet and the FEC repair packet.

An encoding apparatus and a method of encoding a source block including different types of data payloads are provided. The method includes dividing the source block into a predetermined number M of sub blocks, generating a predetermined number P1 of base parity payloads that correspond to each of the predetermined number M of sub blocks by performing first Forward Error Correction (FEC) encoding on each of the predetermined number M of sub blocks, generating a predetermined number P2 of extended parity payloads that correspond to the source block by performing second FEC encoding on a particular type of data payloads among data payloads that make up the source block, and configuring a source coded block based on a predetermined number N of sub coded blocks including the predetermined number M of sub blocks and the predetermined number P1 of base parity payloads generated.
