An approach is provided that detects inbound messages being put to message queues managed by a middleware message queuing platform. The approach retrieves activity trace data corresponding to each of the inbound messages, with the activity trace data maintained by the middleware message queuing platform. The approach generates inbound event records corresponding the inbound messages based on the activity trace data. The approach then detects outbound messages retrieved from the message queues. Activity trace data corresponding to the outbound messages is retrieved and the approach generates an outbound event record for each outbound message. The approach receives a transaction request from a requestor that corresponds to a message. The approach retrieves and returns the inbound event records and outbound event records that correspond to the requested message. The retrieved event records are used for transaction tracking: to build transaction flow topologies and to report transaction performance metrics.

A method for the active and passive monitoring of a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) network infrastructure is provided. Monitoring software on a VoIP phone of the VoIP network infrastructure is configured to collect statistics associated with phone calls made or received by the VoIP phone. A silent phone call is made from the VoIP phone to another VoIP phone in the VoIP network infrastructure. Statistics associated with the silent phone call are collected. Additionally, normal phone calls made and received on the VoIP phone are also monitored. Statistics are collected for these monitored phone calls as well. The collected statistics are stored. The collected statistics are sent to a central monitor. The collected statistics are displayed to a user.

An approach is provided that transmits a load balance request from a first peer node to other peer nodes. Some of the peer nodes have assigned transaction tracking responsibilities. The transmitting is performed in response to identifying that the first peer node is performing at a non-optimal level. The first peer node receives responses from the other peer nodes. A determination is made as to whether to handover one or more of the first peer node's transaction tracking responsibilities. If a second peer node is identified to take some of the first peer node's responsibilities, then a handover message is sent from the first peer node to the second peer node that assigns at least one of the first peer node's assigned transaction responsibilities to the second peer node.

An approach is provided that receives a set of tracking data from a monitored activity. The set of tracking data includes name-value pairs. The received set name-value pairs are compared with context masks. Each context mask include one or more name-filter pairs. One of the sets of context masks is selected in response to determining that the incoming name-value pairs matches the mask name-filter pairs of the selected context mask. Name-value pairs are selected based upon the selected context mask. The selected name-value pairs are then stored in an aggregate data store. If the received set of tracking data fails to match at least one of the name-filter pairs then the received set of tracking data is disregarded and none of the name-value pairs are stored in the aggregate data store.
