An apparatus and method for optical data storage and/or retrieval using an optical data storage medium having a spatially-modulated refractive index that can be altered locally with optical methods. Data can be written at a plurality of depths throughout the volume of the medium using a write beam and relatively simple and inexpensive optical components. The write beam stores data locally by physical distortion of the medium at discrete storage locations. The alterations can be detected as variations in the reflectivity of the storage locations using a retrieval beam.

The method includes writing and erasing of the information using photoionization via sequential two-photon absorption and non-destructive reading the information using fluorescent detection. The apparatuses for writing and reading the information incorporate confocal detection and spherical aberration correction for multilayer volumetric fluorescent data storage. The methods also allow multilevel recording and readout of information for increased storage capacity.

The present invention provides methods and apparatuses for writing information to, reading information from, and erasing information on a luminescent data storage medium comprising Al2O3. A holographic storage and retrieval system for use in co-propagating or counter-propagating geometries having a common optical relay for guiding a signal beam and a reference beam along a common optical axis to a holographic medium to write a hologram therein. The optical relay has an object region imaging quality such that at least 65% and preferably at least 80% of the nominal luminous energy from object pixels is encompassed or "ensquared" by the corresponding image pixels. Additionally, the optical relay has a high total numerical aperture (N.A.) of about 0.83, a pixel N.A. of approximately 0.04 for the signal beam. The system of the invention can be used with holographic storage media in the form of disks, tapes or bulk holographic crystals.
