    Abstract: A lighting device includes a light source emitting light having an orientation distribution around an optical axis, a light guide plate having a hole and including a light entrance surface, a light exit surface, a non-light exit portion, and a light receiving surface, and a reflecting portion. The light entrance surface is opposite the light source such that the optical axis overlaps the hole. The non-light exit portion is the hole and surrounded by the light exit surface. The light receiving surface is next to the light entrance surface and near the non-light exit portion and receives maximum inclination light including light inclined at a largest angle with respect to the optical axis in a plan view. The reflecting portion is arranged opposite the light receiving surface and reflects the maximum inclination light from the light receiving surface toward the non-light exit portion.

    Abstract: A lighting device includes an annular light source including light sources arranged in a circular pattern, a light guide plate having a round shape in a plan view, and a case holding the annular light source and the light guide plate. The light guide plate is disposed inside the annular light source. The light guide plate includes light entering portions, circumferentially aligned portions, and a light emitting portion. The light entering portions are opposed to the light sources. Each circumferentially aligned portion is between the adjacent light entering portions. A dimension of the circumferentially aligned portion in the radial direction is larger than a dimension of the light entering portion in the radial direction. The circumferentially aligned portions are aligned with the light sources in the circumferential direction and configured to contact the light sources when the light guide plate is rotated in the circumferential direction.

    Abstract: A backlight unit includes a lightguide, a light source that emits light to the lightguide, and a barrier layer positioned over the lightguide in a light emitting direction relative to the lightguide. The barrier layer defines a bezel area of the backlight unit, and an active area of the backlight unit from which light is emitted from the lightguide is an area adjacent to a boundary of the bezel area. A prism structure is positioned in the bezel area, wherein stray light emitted from the light source uncoupled to the lightguide is at least partially coupled into the lightguide by the prism structure or directed to a greater degree along the lightguide. The prism structure may be configured as a plurality of lenticular triangular prisms, and may be mounted to a mounting frame, back reflector, or flat panel connector of the backlight unit.

    Abstract: An illumination device includes a light source that emits primary light and a wavelength conversion element that converts at least a portion of the primary light from the light source. The wavelength conversion element includes a phosphor layer having phosphors that absorb at least a portion of the primary light from the light source to emit secondary light, which is polarized, and polymers having birefringence. The phosphors have an anisotropic structure and are aligned generally along a first direction, and the polymers have polymer molecules that are aligned generally along the first direction. An angle formed by a direction of a transition dipole moment of each of the phosphors to a delayed phase axis of each of the polymer molecules with respect to the secondary light emitted from the phosphors towards the polymer molecules is 0° to 45°.
