    摘要: A light-controlling element includes an illumination unit capable of controlling an amount of emitted light, and a light guide body on which the light emitted from the illumination unit is incident. The light guide body has a function of propagating the light while totally reflecting the light inside the light guide body, and the light guide body has a function of propagating the light emitted from the illumination unit at a plurality of different propagation angles inside the light guide body. The light guide body includes a plurality of light extraction regions having a function of extracting the light to the outside. At least two of the plurality of light extraction regions have different incidence angle ranges in which the light is capable of being extracted to the outside.

    摘要: A backlight device of the present invention includes a substrate (2), a liquid crystal layer (4), and a scattering layer (5). The substrate (2) has a surface facing the liquid crystal layer (4), on which surface two comb electrodes (3a and 3b) are provided. The comb electrode (3a) includes a plurality of comb-teeth parts (33a) meshing with a plurality of comb-teeth parts (33b) of the comb electrode (3b). Therefore, the comb electrodes (3a and 3b) can causes electric fields to be generated, in response to an applied voltage, in at least two directions each parallel to the surface of the substrate (2). Further, there is a region whose effective refractive indexes with respect to polarized light p and polarized light s become large. It is therefore possible to control emission of both the polarized light p and the polarized light s.

    摘要: Provided is a dimming device capable of emitting light from any area on a flat plane and which is minimized in crosstalk. The dimming device (1) according to the present invention includes: a light guiding plate (2); an LED (3) disposed on an edge of the light guiding plate (2); a switching section (4); a frame division section (5) that divides one frame period into a plurality of sub frame periods; a light source control section (6) that makes the LED (3) emit light every sub frame period; and a voltage application section (7). The switching section (4) includes scan electrodes (8) disposed in a direction parallel to a direction in which the LED (3) is disposed, a plurality of signal electrodes (10) disposed in a direction at right angles to the scan electrodes, and liquid crystal elements (9) with changeable light extraction rates from the light guiding plate (2). The voltage application section (7) selects a scan electrode out of the plurality of scan electrodes every sub frame period and applies a voltage thereto, and applies, to at least one of the plurality of signal electrodes, a voltage in accordance with a light extraction rate of the liquid crystal element (9). The present invention can be suitably used as a backlight of an image display device.

A light control device (1) of the present invention includes: a light guide plate (2), having rectangular parallelepiped light guide paths juxtaposed to each other, for guiding light entered an edge of a shorter side of the light guide path, in a longer side direction of the light guide paths; LEDs (3), provided at the respective edges, for emitting lights toward the respective light guide paths; and light-passage amount adjusting means for adjusting ratios of light-passage amount of the light guide plate (2). The light-passage amount adjusting means (i) is provided on a light exit surface side of the light guide plate (2) and (ii) has rectangular parallelepiped switching elements (4) which allow ratios of light-passage amount of the light guide plate (2) to be adjustable.     摘要: In a three dimensional video display device (1), an LED unit (10) rotates in the direction of the arrow (24) along top and bottom edges of a display section (28). The LED unit (10) has a left-eye LED array (6) and a right-eye LED array (8), each including plural LEDs (4) aligned in a column. The left-eye LED array (6) displays a left-eye image through an afterimage effect produced by displaying, while rotating, columns of pixel groups constituting the left-eye image. The right-eye LED array 8 displays a right-eye image through an afterimage effect produced by displaying, while rotating, columns of pixel groups constituting the right-eye image. Light from the left-eye image enters the left eye of a viewer, whereas light from the right-eye image enters the right eye. The viewer recognizes a three dimensional image in a range of 360° around the viewer based on binocular parallax.
