When switching from a first head to a second head, features and aspects hereof assure that the second head will not be positioned in the zipper zone of the corresponding second surface and hence will not lose track following servo synchronization and control. In one aspect, added buffer or guard tracks having valid servo information but no data are added on either side of the zipper zone to assure that under the worst-case misalignment of surfaces the second head will not be positioned in its corresponding zipper zone when switching from the first head.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for performing a self-servo write operation in a disk drive. In one embodiment, the disk drive includes a disk surface having a read head and a write head associated therewith. Spiral servo information is written onto the disk surface using a servo track writer. The read head reads the spiral servo information and is used to position the write head, which writes a small band of final servo information onto the disk surface. The small band of final servo information may be embedded servo information. Importantly, the small band of final servo information is not written using the servo track writer. The write head is also used to write self-servo write instructions into the small band of final servo information. Subsequently, the self-servo write instructions are read and a self-servo write operation is performed using the spiral servo information.

    摘要: A disk drive and method are provided for controlling seeking of a transducer that is adjacent to a rotatable data storage disk in a disk drive. The disk drive includes an actuator for positioning the transducer relative to the disk, the method comprising. The actuator is controlled to move the transducer toward a target track on the disk during an initial phase of a seek mode during which the transducer is primarily accelerated toward the target track. During a settle phase of the seek mode which follows the initial phase the actuator is controlled to settle the transducer onto the target track. An initial position, an initial velocity, and an initial acceleration of the transducer are determined at a phase switch time at about when control of the actuator switches from the initial phase to the settle phase of the seek mode. Feed-forward control information is generated based on the determined initial position, initial velocity, and initial acceleration of the transducer. The actuator is controlled responsive to the feed-forward control information to settle the transducer onto the target track during the settle phase of the seek mode.

The transducer is positioned relative one of the tracks based on a compensation scheme that varies based on the determination of the vibration state. The compensation scheme may be varied by selecting among output of two or more compensators, based on the determined of the vibration state of the transducer, to control positioning of the transducer. The compensation scheme may alternatively, or additionally, be varied by varying a contribution from a vibration state actuator compensator to the control of positioning of the transducer. The vibration state actuator compensator is configured to improve transducer track following while the transducer is subjected to vibration.

    摘要: A suspension for a HGA includes a suspension flexure and an out rigger. The suspension flexure has a tongue region having a first flexure part in a tip portion thereof for mounting a trailing edge of a slider and a PZT mounting region for mounting PZT elements. One end of the out rigger is connected to the suspension flexure, and the other end of the out rigger has a rigger support portion which extends above the tongue region so as to support the leading edge of the slider. The structure of the out rigger is capable of stiffening the tongue region of the suspension flexure and, in turns, avoiding the deformation problem and the dimple separation problem during the manufacturing process or in vibration or shock events. The invention also discloses a HGA with the suspension, manufacturing methods of the HGA and a disk drive unit having such HGA.

The body has at least two electrode-piezoelectric combination layers laminated together.     摘要: Altitude sensing systems and/or methods for fly height adjustment in disk drive devices are provided. In certain example embodiments, a PZT-type pressure and/or altitude sensor may be located on the side of the disk drive proximate to the disk edge. When the disk rotates, the air flow generated by the disk will deform the PZT element of the sensor. The PZT element will generate a voltage in response to this deformation. Calibrations may be performed to compensate for altitude changes (e.g. the air inside of the disk drive will become thin and the air resistance will be reduced at higher altitudes). Also, the output sensitivity of the PZT element may change with the altitude change. After the altitude is sensed by the PZT element in the sensor, the servo motor may use this signal to calculate and/or adjust the dynamic fly height (DFH) and/or fly height of the read/write head.
