摘要:
A method of making a composite to metal joint between a metal ring and a tubular composite formed from crossing helical windings of high strength fibers including the steps of winding the fiber on a mandrel at a helical angle equal to or greater than the slip angle of the fiber and providing the metal ring with a surface in the form of a hyperboloid of one sheet and a pair of isotensoidal surfaces of revolution contiguous with the hyperboloidal surface to form a concave portion in the ring over which the helical fibers form straight lines without bridging and hug these concave surfaces to form an interference fit between the composite and the metal ring.

A plurality of conductors are surrounded by a continuous, flexible belt which is doubled over to provide loops at each end thereof. Non-metallic rods are disposed through the loops for providing surfaces to which a non-metallic buckle or strap is connected for securing the belt. The belt consists of a plurality of glass fiber cords which are surrounded by a cured elastomeric material. The cords are formed from glass fiber strands which are twisted sufficiently to provide the desired amount of belt strength and flexibility.

A film is disclosed which will accommodate high shear strain in a rigidly supported epoxy impregnated Nb.sub.3 Sn superconducting coil (SCC). In a generator application the SCC is subjected to a combined load due to differential thermal contraction, magnetic, and centrifugal forces. These strains could lead to coil fracture and resulting degradation of the field and current-carrying properties. A low modulus material at the interface between the SCC and support structure will reduce or distribute the shear strain to an acceptable level, i.e., no degradation in current carrying properties. Two film materials, polyethylene terephthalate Mylar (DuPont Chemical) and polycarbonate Makrofol KG (Mobay chemical) are disclosed as suitable damping or interface films. An adhesive such as the polyurethane Bostik 7070 is used for affixing the film to the winding surface.
