The zirconium oxide alloy consists essentially of zirconium oxide and a the group consisting of MgO, CaO, Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, Sc.sub.2 O.sub.3, and rare earth oxides. The zirconium oxide alloy has a concentration of the secondary oxide of, in the case of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, about 0.5 to about 5 mole percent; in the case of MgO, about 0.1 to about 1.0 mole percent, in the case of CeO.sub.2, about 0.5 to about 15 mole percent, in the case of Sc.sub.2 O.sub.3, about 0.5 to about 7.0 mole percent and in the case of CaO from about 0.5 to about 5 mole percent, relative to the total of the zirconium oxide alloy, the compacting further comprising forming a blank. A mold is provided for receiving and processing the ceramic powder thereby forming a ceramic billet. Shaping of the ceramic billet is undertaken to form a near net-shaped ceramic bearing. Thereafter, the near net-shaped ceramic bearing is sintered resulting in a sintered ceramic bearing. After sintering, the ceramic bearing is further shaped or machined. After forming the ceramic bearing, at least two air inlet ports are formed in the body portion of the bearing in fluid communication with air channels having preferably a spiral pattern formed in at least one flange portion of the bearing.

An improved gear micropump (10) for delivering corrosive materials, particularly photographic materials, such as dyes and emulsions, has a pair of intermeshing gears (16,18) rotatably mounted on zirconia ceramic shafts (24,26). The ceramic shafts of the invention may be formed from zirconia and zirconia composite materials. The gear micropump (10) having the zirconia ceramic shafts (24,26) eliminates pulsation during fluid delivery and is resistant to wear and abrasion. Moreover the zirconia ceramic shafts (24,26) are strongly resistant to chemicals like photographic emulsions and dyes and, therefore, do not contaminate product with corrosive materials.

A method of making a printhead includes forming a channel member by providing a mold having a top portion having peaks and valleys and by tape casting a slurry of piezoelectric material into the mold and onto the peaks and valleys of the top portion of the mold to form a tape cast member having a bottom surface with peaks and valleys and a flat top surface and removing the tape cast member. After removing the tape cast member, the top surface of the tape cast member is embossed so as to provide peaks and valleys in opposite sides of the tape cast member wherein the valleys in the top surface are disposed in an offset relationship to the peaks in the bottom surface. Thereafter, the embossed tape cast member is poled to align the electrical dipoles within the piezoelectric material; and a coating of conductive material is formed over the top and bottom surfaces of the tape cast member and then cutting grooves through conductive coating into the top surface in the valleys of the tape cast member to form a channel member. Finally, an orifice plate is provided over top surface of the channel member and a substrate over the bottom surface of the channel member.

A method of fabricating a modulator for modulating an incident beam of light includes a substrate having a cavity formed therein and a plurality of spaced-apart deformable elements formed in the cavity. The deformable elements each has a base layer, a poled magnetic layer formed in the base layer and a first light reflection layer deposited on the magnetic layer for reflecting an incident beam of light. Between adjacent deformable elements on the base of the cavity is arranged a second light reflection layer. A conductive element formed in the substrate electro-magnetically energizes the deformable elements to deflect in the cavity. Incident light passing through each one of the first light reflection layers is caused to destructively interfere with light reflected from the second light reflection layers thereby causing modulation of the incident light.

A method of making a modulator for modulating an incident beam of light uses a substantially planar light reflection surface formed by a light reflection layer associated with a plurality of deformable elements and a light reflection layer associated with a plurality of fixed elements. The fixed and deformable elements are arranged in a cavity of a substrate supporting the modulator. Light is modulated when a current is applied to a conductive element operably associated with the deformable elements causing the light reflective layer associated with the deformable element to deflect towards the base of the cavity from its substantial planar relations with the light reflecting layer of the fixed element.
