The present invention relates to an optical amplifier and, in particular, it relates to multistage optical amplification having a feature for compensating for the tilt that is generated when a signal having a plurality of optical wavelengths and the like according to a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) method is amplified in a wide bandwidth. The multistage optical amplifier comprises: a plurality of optical amplifiers that are connected in a multistage manner; and a common control section for commonly controlling pumping light powers of said plurality of optical amplifiers, wherein said common control section includes: tilt detection means for detecting amounts of tilt of each of said plurality of optical amplifiers; and tilt cancellation means for controlling the pumping light powers of said plurality of optical amplifiers so that the amounts of tilt of each of the optical amplifiers detected by said tilt detection means cancel each other.

The present invention is aimed at providing a low-cost optical transmission system of simple configuration, capable of achieving a satisfactory OSNR even in the time of transmission of a small number of wavelengths. To this end, the optical transmission system is provided with a noise elimination unit corresponding to each of optical amplifiers arranged on a transmission path. This noise elimination unit includes a transmission characteristic capable of selectively transmitting a light in a wavelength band in which a signal light exists through an amplification band of the optical amplifier, and includes a function of automatically eliminating a noise light in a wavelength band in which a signal light does not exist, of noise lights generated in the optical amplifiers.

In a transmission apparatus, a plurality of optical transceivers respectively generates optical signals. A plurality of transponders generates a plurality of optical signals to be multiplexed as a WDM signal from among a plurality of optical signals generated by the plurality of optical transceivers. An optical switch circuit is provided between the plurality of optical transceivers and the plurality of transponders and it switches the plurality of paths of the optical signals between them. The priorities of a plurality of optical signals to be multiplexed as a WDM signal are set in a management table. A detector detects communication conditions of the respective optical signals that are multiplexed as the received WDM signal. A control circuit switches the paths in the optical switch circuit on the basis of the priorities set by the management table when a fault is detected by the detector.

And the controller rewrites the transmission label of the transponder corresponding to the client device of the lower priority order than the priority order of the client device connected to the transponder of the irregular input, upon the optical signal provided by the wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing unit to one of the transponders being irregular, and controls the label-changed transponder for which the transmission label has been rewritten so that the label-changed transponder provides the wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing unit with the optical signal including the rewritten transmission label.
