Operation is not impaired in the event of the tube being fractured during the rolling operation, since the ejection operation takes place in timed relation to the severing operation and does not depend on detection of the presence or absence of tube ends.

This invention concerns a process and an arrangement for the production of seamless tube. An ingot heated to the rolling temperature is pierced in a skew-rolling stand to form a hollow ingot, is later stretched into a tube bloom and is rolled out into a finished tube. In order to improve this familiar process, it is proposed to conduct the stretching immediately after the piercing in the same heat as the latter, in which case the rolled goods is stretched in the same skew-rolling stand, but with a passage direction that is opposite to that of piercing. An arrangement with which this process according to the invention can be implemented is also proposed.

In a skew-rolling stand for rolling hollow billets, in particular for stretching hollow billets into tubular blooms, work material guides are provided at the entry end and/or at the delivery end. These work material guides comprise a preferably motor-driven guide tube (19) which can be rotated about its longitudinal axis, which considerably improves guiding and offers additional protection against heat losses and scaling of the work material. The guide tube does away with the need for a re-heating furnace and allows immediate subsequent finish-rolling.

The amount of materials in a piece of tubular stock is measured before the stock enters a stretch-reducing rolling mill and the mill is so controlled that the finished tube can be cut into lengths without the occurrence of overlengths or underlengths. In the case of a seamless tube, the piece of tubular stock is weighed and the flying means which cut the finished tube are so controlled that the lengths of all the finished pieces lie within prescribed tolerances so that there is no waste, other than the usual cropped ends. In the case of welded tube, the thickness of the strip material from which the tube is made can be welded, and the welded tubular stock can be cut to a suitable length to ensure that no overlengths or underlengths are obtained after the stretch-reducing and cutting of the finished tube into pieces of prescribed length, within tolerance limits.
