A method and system for designing an impingement film floatwall panel system for a combustion chamber for a gas turbine engine comprising the steps of creating an impingement film floatwall panel knowledge base of information. The knowledge base has a plurality of design rule signals with respect to a corresponding plurality of parameter signals of associated elements of impingement film floatwall panels for a combustion chamber, wherein the knowledge base comprises at least one data value signal for each one of the plurality of design rule signals. The steps also include entering a desired data value signal for a selected one of the plurality of parameter signals of an associated element of the impingement film floatwall panels and comparing the entered desired data value signal for the selected one of the plurality of parameters with the corresponding at least one data value signal in the knowledge base for the corresponding one of the plurality of design rule signals. If the result of the step of comparing is such that the entered desired data value signal for the selected one of the plurality of parameter signals is determined to have a first predetermined relationship with respect to the corresponding at least one data value signal in the knowledge base for the selected one of the plurality of design rule signals, create signals representative of a geometric representation of the selected one of the plurality of parameter signals of the associated element of the impingement film floatwall panels.

A combined fuel distribution and flameholding system (14) includes an improved spraybar (16) having a tapered portion (28) and a radially inwardly disposed tip portion (30). The tapered portion (28) is configured to provide a flow profile (26) diminishing with respect to inward radial displacement from the burner wall (32) for achieving a uniform blockage to free flow area ratio within the burner. The tip portion (30) creates a turbulent or pilot region (32) in the center of the burner, providing a local environment well suited for ignition and low load burner operation. The individual bars (16) are releasable (46) from the exterior of the burner for allowing longitudinal withdrawal of the entire spraybar (16) through a corresponding opening (48) in the burner wall (22).

A gas turbine engine has a combustor section using an axial prediffuser with an off-axis cowl passage formed by a diffuser outer wall and a combustor outer cowl. Flow from the prediffuser is split into intermediate outer and inner shroud passages and then the intermediate outer passage is further split into a outer shroud passage and a combustor cowl passage which supplies air to the fuel nozzles. The outer passage and cowl flow split is delayed to improved pressure supply and flow distribution to the outer passage.

A gas turbine engine combustor has a plurality of circumferentially fuel injectors. Two lower nozzles are pilot nozzles and are of the fuel pressure atomized type, and the majority of nozzles are of the air atomized type. A pressurizing valve maintains high fuel pressure to the pilot nozzles at all operating conditions. The fuel/air ratio for the pilot nozzles is optimized facilitating start up and increased stability during transient conditions.
