摘要: A printing arrangement can include an ink-receiving coating applied to a media substrate, the ink-receiving coating having a coating thickness being configured to have a concentration gradient relative to the thickness. In the concentration gradient, the concentration of a cationic agent is greater in a center region of the ink-receiving coating relative to an upper region and a lower region.

摘要: A process is provided that allows the production of multi-layer coatings in which one or more topcoats can be applied to a porous basecoat to produce a uniform and defect-free coating layer. Specifically, a process is provided in which a liquid is applied to the basecoat prior to topcoating such that the air in the basecoat is removed prior to topcoating. This process can occur in-line with a simple apparatus described herein. An added benefit of this method is that it also allows the possibility of adding functionality or performing chemistry to a basecoat after the basecoat is dried and before the topcoat is applied in a single process. For example, the wetting fluid may contain, but is not limited to, surfactants, pH modifiers, polymers, crosslinkers, pigments, and/or dye stabilizers. Advantages over what has been done before include the use of re-wetting process that allows a topcoat to be applied to a porous basecoat that is coated on a non-porous substrate such that bubbles are not formed in the topcoat. In addition, there is added flexibility of incorporating functionality or chemistry in the re-wetting process. Finally, the process is simple to implement and is compatible with many general coating methods, such as slot-die coating, rod coating, blade coating, gravure coating, knife-over-roll coating, or the like.

摘要: A method of forming a print medium having porous and swellable properties. The method includes providing a coating formulation that has at least 50% by weight of crosslinked organic particles. The crosslinked organic particles have a particle size of less than approximately 1 μm. The coating formulation is then applied to a substrate. The crosslinked organic particles may be formed from polyvinylalcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, gelatin, polyester, polyamine, polyimide, starch, cellulose, polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, and mixtures thereof. The crosslinked organic particles may be formulated to absorb at least two times their weight of water. A print medium utilizing the crosslinked organic particles is also disclosed.

摘要: The present invention is drawn to a composition for cast-coating on ink-jet media. The composition includes a liquid vehicle, silica particulates, and an internal release agent. The composition is substantially free of polymeric binder and can improve the glossiness of a porous particulate-coated ink-receiving media by at least 2 gloss units at 20 degrees. The silica particulates can be suspended in the liquid vehicle at about 1-35 wt %, and can have a particle size of less than about 150 nm. The internal release agent can be present at about 0.5-10 wt %.
