摘要:
A method and apparatus for automatically determining a consumable type when a consumable is disposed within an electrode holder of a welding-type system is disclosed. The invention includes a detector assembly that measures a physical characteristic of a connected consumable and provides feedback regarding that which is measured. From the feedback, the operating parameters of a welding-type process may be automatically prescribed.

Methods and systems for clearing short circuits during a MIG welding process are disclosed. A method may include detecting a short circuit and increasing output current of a power source at a first ramp rate to clear the short circuit. The method further includes increasing output current at a second ramp rate after the output current reaches a threshold. Power sources and systems implementing the method are also provided.

Methods and apparatus for initiating an arc (e.g., a welding arc) by placing liquid droplets containing ions in the gap between an electrode and a workpiece. This is done while a potential difference is applied between the electrode and the workpiece. The presence of the ions renders the gap between the electrode and the workpiece more conductive, thereby reducing the voltage threshold needed to initiate an arc between the electrode and the workpiece. When the voltage threshold reaches the level of the applied potential difference, the arc will be initiated.

A method and apparatus for controlling a welding-type power supply includes providing a current wave form having an arc current portion and a short circuit current portion. An arc state is entered by retracting a welding wire, and a short circuit state is entered by advancing the wire. The current enters the arc current portion prior to the creation of the arc and the current enters the short circuit current portion prior to the creation of the short, by coordinating the wave form with the wire retraction. This may be preformed on a wire having a diameter of 2.4 mm or more to a weld and applying a welding current of less than 100 amps, or of less than 35 amps. One current waveform during the arc state includes at least three segments, and the last segment is entered into prior to the short circuit state being entered, and is the same current magnitude as the current magnitude at the start of the short circuit state. Penetration and/or bead formation may be controlled by controlling the advancement of the wire into the weld pool. The balance may be user set.

A welder having an internal shielding gas regulator is disclosed. The welder has an internal gas cylinder and an internal regulator disposed in an enclosure. The welder may be equipped with an auxiliary shielding gas cylinder inlet so that a bulk shielding gas cylinder can be attached thereto and have a flow therefrom regulated by the internal shielding gas regulator. The welder constructed according to the invention is highly transportable, compact, and self-sufficient.

Methods and apparatus for initiating a welding arc by directing a plasma jet into the space between the tip of the welding electrode and the workpiece. This is done while an electrical potential is applied between the electrode and the workpiece. The ionized plasma gas renders the space between the electrode and the workpiece more conductive, thereby reducing the voltage threshold needed to initiate an arc between the electrode and the workpiece. When the voltage threshold reaches the level of the applied electrical potential, the arc will be initiated.

Methods, controllers, and power sources for controlling weld states of a MIG welding machine having a 115 volt inverter are provided. The regulation of a power source may include determining a command current signal based on a maximum allowable voltage error determined from the output condition at the weld. The signal may be provided to a controller that regulates the output of the 115 volt inverter. A MIG welding power source may include the 115 volt inverter and a processor that determines a maximum allowable voltage offset from a voltage feedback signal and a voltage level. The processor may provide a signal based on a determined instantaneous command current to regulate the 115 volt inverter.
