    摘要: A high finesse holographic Fabry-Perot etalon and method of making a high finesse holographic Fabry-Perot etalon is disclosed. Particularly, a holographic Fabry-Perot etalon which achieves high finesse despite non-flat interfaces between the etalon media is presented. In a preferred method of fabricating a high finesse Fabry-Perot etalon, single step recording of both holograms simultaneously, with the spacer and substrates in place, is employed which preserves full phase synchronization between the holograms. In spite of imperfections or irregularities of the interface surfaces of the substrates or spacers, the holographic fringes in the holograms remain flat even for slightly different refractive indices between the various media. The position and flatness of the fringes remains similar to perfect Fabry-Perot etalon structure.

    摘要: Systems and methods for shaping light from a liquid crystal display are described. A holographic high contrast viewing screen embedded in a liquid crystal display includes a first substrate; a first electrode connected to said first substrate; a light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser connected to said first electrode, said light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser having a first orientation and a first refractive index; a liquid crystal adjacent said light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser, the liquid crystal having a second refractive index that is substantially equal to the first refractive index, in the absence of a driving voltage applied to the first electrode and the second electrode; an alignment layer adjacent said liquid crystal, said alignment layer having a second orientation that is substantially orthogonal to said first orientation; a second electrode connected to said alignment layer; and a second substrate connected to said second electrode. The second refractive index varies as a function of the driving voltage, which is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode. The systems and methods provide advantages in that the field of view, including the horizontal and vertical extent, can be determined, in advance by the manufacturer.

    摘要: A collimating screen simulator comprising a projector and a holographic diffuser screen. The projector is adapted to project a viewable image onto a focal plane that is spaced from the projector. The focal plane has a backside and a viewing side opposite the focal plane backside. In operation, the projector is able to project the image onto the focal plane backside. The holographic diffuser screen is adapted to permit light from a source and incident upon a surface of the diffuser screen to pass through the screen. The holographic diffuser screen has a first surface facing the focal plane viewing side for receiving the incident light. The holographic diffuser screen also has a second surface opposite the first surface. The holographic diffuser screen is spaced from the focal plane viewing side by a distance effective for enabling a viewer facing the second surface of the holographic diffuser screen to see collimated light exiting the holographic screen.

    摘要: A beam deflector comprising a pair of mated microprism arrays with one of the arrays comprised of a variable refractive index material capable of being selectively changed in response to a field whose magnitude or intensity is regulated by regulating voltage applied. The other array preferably is comprised of a material having a constant refractive index. A conductive layer is disposed on both sides of the variable refractive index array. A pane preferably is disposed in front and behind the arrays. Two pairs of the arrays can be arranged parallel to each other with their microprisms generally perpendicular forming a two-dimensional deflector. To achieve a deflection response time faster than 100 &mgr;s, each prism has a height no larger than about 20 &mgr;m and a width preferably no greater than about 100 &mgr;m. Preferably, each prism height is less than about 15 to about 10 &mgr;m to achieve a response time 30 &mgr;s or faster. A method of making the deflector includes using direct-write electron beam lithography to make a master for replicating arrays having a height of 10 &mgr;m or less. A pair of deflectors can be used to deflect a beam in two dimensions and can be used in a scanner. Where the beam is a laser, the deflector can be used in a laser imaging radar assembly. Such a scanner and laser imaging radar assembly provide fast scanning of an object or region advantageously without requiring the deflector to move during scanning.
