The apparatus detects other apexes from any apex of the obtained polygon corresponding to maximum and minimum coordinate values in a direction perpendicular to the scanning line and paints a predetermined region according to ridge data on the left and right sides of each scanning line. The ridge data are obtained by interpolation between data indicative of neighoring apexes chained from apexes having maximum and minimum values.
