    摘要： Disclosed are (a) liquid crystalline compounds which are essential as component of the liquid crystal compositions, are excellent in miscibility with other liquid crystal compositions, particularly in the miscibility at low temperatures, and expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R0 and R1 independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; ring A0, ring A1, ring A2, and ring A3 represent 1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl group, 1,4-phenylene group in which one or more hydrogen atoms on the ring may be represented by a halogen atom or R2O group, pyridine-2,5-diyl group, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group; Z0, Z1, Z2, and Z3 represent —CH2CH2—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —CF2O—, —OCF2—, —COO—, —OCO—, —(CH2)4—, or single bond; Q1 and Q2 represent hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; Q3 represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or R2O group; R2 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Y represents a halogen atom, cyano group, or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; l, m, n and o are 0, 1, or 2 with the proviso that 1≦l+m+n+o≦3; and the atom which constitutes this compound may be replaced by its isotope; and (b) liquid crystal display devices fabricated by using the liquid crystal composition.

    摘要： There is provided an electrically and chemically stable liquid crystalline compound which exhibits a significantly large value of De and a high voltage holding ratio. The compound is a phenyldioxane derivative represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R represents a C1-C20 alkyl group; each of n1 and n2 represents 0 or 1; each of Q.sub.1 through Q.sub.6 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, or a chlorine atom, provided that Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 0, and that at least one of Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 1; each of Za and Zb represents a single bond, --COO--, or --CF.sub.2 O--; Zc represents a single bond or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a C1-C5 halogenated alkyl group in which one or more non-adjacent methylene groups may be replaced by oxygen atoms or sulfur atoms; and each of the elements that constitute the compound may comprise isotopes of the element. The compound also exhibits excellent compatibility with previously known liquid crystalline compounds, and is advantageously used for low voltage driving of liquid crystal displays for TFTs. There are also provided liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound, as well as liquid crystal display elements constructed of the compositions.
