Abstract:
To provide reliable and accurate ignition timing for 5''''/38 and 5''''/54 rocket assisted projectiles, a mass is situated so as to shear loose its holding pin when the projectile is gun fired. At termination of setback, the mass is moved by a spring to percussively actuate the thermal battery. The battery provides power to a timing circuit which after a suitable delay switches current through a squib.
Abstract:
A variable time fuze for a gun launched projectile comprises a digital electronic counter which is preset by insertion of a coded key into a slot within which are spring loaded contacts. The number which is preset in the counter depends on the pattern of conductive and non-conductive areas inscribed on the key. A clock circuit provides pulses to the counter which initiates a squib-firing network when the preset number is reached. Time delay circuits are provided to prevent accidental firing of the squib, to strobe the preset number into the counter and to allow the counter to stabilize before application of the clock pulses.
Abstract:
A sabot having a thermoplastic body and thermosetting reinforced phenolic ring embedded therein which ring retains a projectile in position in the forcing cone of a gun barrel is disclosed. A split ring plastic retainer is used to hold the sabot in place on the tapered rear portion of the projectile. When the projectile is fired, centrifugal force and heat cause the thermoplastic material to expand engaging both the rifling and side walls of the gun bore and thereby imparting a spinning motion to the projectile, while also acting as an obturator to prevent the escape of propellant gases.
