A process for producing guide bands made of deformable synthetic material for flight-stabilized projectiles which are shot out of smooth and drawn gun barrels. The projectile includes an annular groove in which the guide band is mounted and from which it slightly radially projects. The process includes the steps of fixing the projectile in an injection molding device; directly injecting synthetic material into the space between the injection molding device and the annular groove via at least one slitted injection molding gate; and adjusting and maintaining a temperature gradient between the projectile and injection molding device, so that the injection molding device is substantially colder than the projectile.

An obturator for a projectile to be fired from a rifled barrel is provided in accordance with this invention, with this obturator being mounted on the projectile in such a way as to permit rotational slippage. A preferred form of our obturator comprises a ring of non-metalic material, which ring is capable of being mounted on a circular body portion of the projectile. An external portion of the obturator ring has a plurality of encircling slots, essentially parallel to each other, which slots are rearwardly inclined so as to define a plurality of chevron-like members designed to forcibly engage the rifling of the barrel. The interior of the obturator ring is designed to slip rotationally with respect to the projectile body portion as the projectile travels along the barrel, thereby advantageously minimizing the rotation of the projectile as a result of rifling effects. One embodiment of an obturator in accordance with this invention may be designed to disintegrate as it leaves the barrel, whereas another embodiment may utilize an overwrap of high temperature filamentary material in at least some of the slots, which overwrap serves to increase the hoop strength of the obturator.

A fin-stabilized subcaliber projectile, which comprises a projectile body including a central portion. A drive cage surrounds the central portion of the projectile body. The drive cage includes a plurality of segments held together by suitable means and covered by a common sealing disc on its rear side. The sealing disc lies in front of a guide or fin assembly arranged at the rear. The rear of the drive cage is formed as a frustocone, and the sealing disc on the rear side is shaped such that as a result of gas pressure developed upon firing, the drive-cage segments are pushed with radial force against the projectile body.

The driving band is made by coating a fabric strip with uncured rubber, wrapping the coated strip to form an annular preform, and molding and curing the preform to form an integrally molded band. Various means are provided for assembling the driving band in an artillery shell.

The present invention discloses a shot-start projectile apparatus for a w gun tube. The apparatus can be fitted to a projectile as an auxilliary obturator or can be designed to the proper weight and used as the projectile. The apparatus comprises a torque bolt, a rear band, an alignment sleeve, a front band and an alignment nut. The front and rear bands are identical and they are made of metallic or non-metallic material. The remaining components of the apparatus are made of metal. The front and rear bands provide obturation to prevent hot propellant gases from leaking in front of the projectile.

In a breech-loading gun loaded by first ramming a projectile into the gun rrel to a firing position therein and then inserting a separate propelling charge, unlimited fall-back of the projectile from the firing position is prevented by means of an annular internal groove in the barrel providing a forwardly-facing shoulder, a rearwardly-facing shoulder carried by the projectile, and resilient means for automatically moving the projectile shoulder outwardly into abutting relation with the barrel shoulder on rearward movement of the projectile from its firing position. In one embodiment, the projectile shoulder is the rear end of a resilient strip extending rearwardly and outwardly from the projectile. In another embodiment, the projectile shoulder is the rear side of a radially-movable spring-biased detent on the projectile.

The present invention relates to the use of plastics for rotating bands on projectiles fired from rifled gun barrels. The plastic band is injection molded into a circumferential channel provided in the projectile body. The cross section of the circumferential channel is designed such as to provide a tight gas seal between the plastic rotating band and the projectile body, to assure transfer of spin introduced by the rifling in the gun barrel and to secure the rotating band to the projectile after exit from the muzzle of the gun. The portion of the plastic rotating band protruding beyond the projectile body engraves and is compressed into the rifling groove of the gun barrel, thus obturating the propellant gases and transmitting the spinning motion to the projectile. The plastic rotating band is lighter and costs less than conventional metallic rotating bands and is, in addition, a noncritical war material. Furthermore, its use yields better obturation and reduced barrel wear than is obtained with conventional rotating bands.
