Abstract: Assembly apparatus including mechanism for automatically supplying work pieces such as printed circuit boards sequentially to one or more work stations from a stack and for thereafter unloading the boards seriatim whereby only a single operator is required. The mechanism may be a vertically movable, freestanding turntable or turret type for simultaneously serving a selected one or more stations, operation of any one of the stations desirably controlling the turret indexing whereby the several stations operate simultaneously. The mechanism is adapted to service at least one work station optionally including an X-Y positioning table whereat successive boards during dwell times may be shifted to programmed component receiving positions prior to return to the turret feeding mechanism.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring use of a thread-like element to detect improper operation of a machine utilizing the element. The monitored amount of element use in a machine cycle is compared to a preset standard of element use for the machine cycle during proper operation of the machine. Deviation from the preset standard is then effective to provide a signal. The signal preferably disables the machine from further operation and activates an alarm indicative of the detected improper operation. The machine cycle for the preset standard is a function of real machine operations, preferably a predetermined number of real cycles of machine operation.

Abstract: In a sewing machine having thread stitch forming instrumentalities for forming successive stitches in a workpiece and having means for moving the workpiece in vector directions and wherein the stitch forming instrumentalities may produce stitch abnormalities in at least one of the vector directions of workpiece movement, a method of forming normally appearing stitches by tensioning the stitch forming thread in response to the vector direction of workpiece movement. The method may also include drawing the stitch abnormalities into the workpiece. Apparatus for carrying out the foregoing method has means responsive to the vector direction of workpiece movement for controlling variable thread tensioning means included in the stitch forming instrumentalities.
