A method to dynamically assign data rates, for digital data transmission in wireless communication systems, which are just sufficient to meet the needs of the use is presented. The method monitors the data traffic and anticipates when the assigned data rate is inadequate to support the data traffic resulting in a loss of data or when the assigned data rate is more than necessary to support the data traffic and results in inefficient usage of system resources.

The assigned radio configuration is chosen from one of at least two radio configurations by examining which radio configuration supports a higher data transmission rate. This examination is determined by calculating the data transmission rate for the data burst(s) base on a power level and Walsh code for each of the radio configurations.

The present invention provides a method for handling potentially corrupted frames. The method includes receiving a frame having a first sequence number, determining, based on the first sequence number, whether the frame is potentially corrupted, and determining a number of received potentially corrupted frames in response to determining that the frame is potentially corrupted. The method also includes determining whether to drop the potentially corrupted frame based on the number of received potentially corrupted frames.
