Abstract: A pilot valve assembly for use with a railroad switch heater that resists sooting and blowout, and includes a burner nozzle, circular in cross section, and a shield and deflector unit mounted on the burner nozzle. The shield portion of the shield and deflector unit is square in cross section and extends from the burner nozzle terminating in a flame discharge opening. A deflector portion extends over the flame discharge opening and covers about one-third of the area opening.
