Abstract: The subject matter of this specification relates to a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system. In at least one implementation, the LiDAR system comprises a first signal source; a second signal source; a combiner to generate a hybrid transmission signal from signals generated by the first signal source and the second signal source; a first photodetector to measure a first component of a reflection signal related to range of a target; and a second photodetector to measure a second component of the reflection signal related to velocity of the target, wherein the system is configured to derive the range and velocity of the target from the first component and the second component, respectively.

Abstract: The subject matter of this specification can be implemented in, among other things, systems and methods that enable lidar devices capable of detecting and processing multiple optical modes present in a beam reflected from a target object. Different received optical modes can be spatially separated and electronic signals can be generated that are representative of a coherence information contained in various optical modes. Multiple generated electronic signals can be amplified, phase-shifted, mixed, etc., to identify signals, individually or in a combination, that can be used for identification of a range and velocity of the target object with the highest accuracy.

Abstract: Example embodiments relate to light detection and ranging (lidar) devices or other apparatus that incorporate laser light emitters capable of increased pulse energies and decreased pulse durations. These laser light emitters include a gain medium having two portions to which a pump electrode and a switch electrode, respectively, are coupled. The pump electrode is configured to apply a current through the gain medium that provides energy for lasing and the switch electrode is configured to apply a current through the gain medium that controls a transparency of the second portion of the gain medium. Thus the switch electrode, which controls the timing of emitted light pulses, can be driven by a lower current and thus have shorter pulse widths, rise time, and/or fall times, thereby allowing for shorter, higher-energy laser pulses to be emitted.
