A drive system for driving an endless chain of a mineral mining installation employs one or more chain wheels each driven by an electric motor and gearing including planetary gearing. The planetary gearing has a ring gear which can be held stationary to permit drive to be transmitted. The ring gear is coupled through a clutch, reduction gearing and a braking device to another load-balancing electric motor. Load sensors in the reduction gearing disengage the clutch in the event of overloading. The ring gear is automatically held stationary by the braking device when the load-balancing motor is inoperative. When the motor is switched on the braking device is released to permit the motor to rotate the ring gear in one direction or the other at controlled speed to vary the transmission ratio and effect load balancing.

A transmission for transmitting drive from a motor to a drive sprocket wheel for driving the drive chain of a mineral mining plough has a housing which is attached to a side plate of the drive frame of a mine conveyor. The housing is formed with a recess sized and shaped to accommodate the sprocket wheel. The recess is open at one end to permit the plough drive chain to enter and leave the sprocket wheel. The housing is provided with connector flanges adjacent to the end remote from the recess opening, and with a spacer adjacent to the end adjacent to the recess opening. The spacer is detachably secured to the housing and to the drive frame, or to an intermediate channel section which joins the drive frame to a scraper-chain conveyor. The spacer and the flanges are bolted to the drive frame and/or the channel section.

A longwall conveyor composed of channel sections arranged end-to-end and a scraper-chain assembly moved to transfer material along the channel sections has a main drive station at one end and an auxiliary drive station at the other end. Each drive station has a frame rotatably supporting a drum around which is entrained the scraper-chain assembly. Drive motor and gearing units are carried by the frames and drive the drums. At each drive station there is a housing in which a sprocket wheel drivably engages with a chain used to haul a plough or a similar machine along the conveyor. Drive motor and gearing units are supported by the housings and drive the sprocket wheels. The housing and sprocket wheel at the main drive station is slidably mounted on the frame and a piston and cylinder unit effects slidable displacement of the housing to vary the tension in the drive chain. The frame at the auxiliary drive station is also slidably mounted to a structure rigidly connected to the conveyor channel sections and supporting or forming the housing thereat. Piston and cylinder units effect slidable displacement of the frame to independently vary the tension in the scraper-chain assembly.

A high performance drive system for a mineral mining installation employs separate main and auxiliary drives with wheels around with a chain is entrained. Each drive is composed of an asynchronous motor and spur gearing. An additional over-ride planetary gearing unit is incorporated in at least one of the drives to distribute loading as evenly as possible. The planetary gearing is operable to provide a transmission ratio which can be varied in accordance with load or rotational speed of the drive(s). The planetary gearing unit has two sets of planet wheels on a common carrier. One set of planet wheels mesh with an input sun wheel and the other set of wheels mesh with an output sun wheel. The sets of planet wheels are disposed so that one wheel of one set meshes with an adjacent wheel of the other set. A further control motor drives a pinon which meshes with the carrier and this further motor is operated in accordance with e.g. the load or rotational speed of the drive(s). With the further motor stationary the transmission ratio of the planetary gearing is 1:1.
