Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a tape embedded drive having a head-gimbal assembly (HGA) and a contact plate. By using a support structure or contact plate beneath the tape, read and write heads can be designed to be narrower than the tape. The support structure or contact plate can stretch or relax the tape so that the spacing between servo tracks on the tape corresponds to the servo to servo spacing on the head. HGAs, which are narrower than the tape, can fly over the tape and read data from and write data to the tape. The HGA can have a single head or multiple heads. Additionally, multiple independent head assemblies can also be used for reading from and writing to the same tape.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive comprising one or more tape head modules. Each tape head module comprises 65 data elements disposed in a first row, each data element being a write element or a read element, and at least 5 servo element pairs disposed in a second row, the second row being disposed parallel to the first row. The second row is spaced a distance in a first direction from the first row. One or more data elements and one or more servo element pairs may be unwired and non-operable. The tape drive may comprise three tape head modules, where the second tape head module is disposed between the first and third tape head modules. Each data element of the first tape head module and the third tape head module are write elements, and each data element of the second module is a read element.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a captive tape drive comprising a tape head. The captive drive comprises an upper assembly, the upper assembly comprising a first tape, a first supply reel, a first take-up reel, and two or more rollers. The captive tape drive further comprises a lower assembly disposed below the upper assembly, the lower assembly comprising a second tape, a second supply reel, a second take-up reel, and two or more rollers. The tape head is disposed between the plurality of rollers, and is configured to move between the upper assembly and the lower assembly to access the first and second tapes. The tape head comprises one or more modules, each module comprising 64 writers and 64 readers. Each module is configured to write data to the first and second tapes using the 64 writers and to read verify the newly written data using the 64 readers.
