    摘要: The rate of impact between the peening elements and an internal surface of a hollow part is a function of the vibration frequency, and there is a cut-off frequency at which a hollow part can vibrate and induce repeated impact between its internal surface and the peening elements because the rate of impact becomes erratic and loses its cyclical nature as the vibration frequency deviates from the cut-off frequency. The present invention provides a method for determining the cut-off frequency at which a hollow part can vibrate and maintain the repetitive nature of the impact between its internal surface and the peening elements. Such a method requires a peening element speed limit ratio, which is the ratio of the velocity of the hollow part compared to the velocity of the peening element above which the rate of impact begins to become erratic and lose its cyclical nature. The present invention utilizes the peening element speed limit ratio to determine the frequency at which to vibrate the hollow part when peening its internal surface so as to and maintain repeated impact between it and the peening elements.

    摘要: The present invention is a method and apparatus for peening the internal surface of non-ferromagnetic hollow parts. Ferromagnetic peening elements are inserted into the non-ferromagnetic hollow part, and a magnetic dipole creates a magnetic field through the non-ferromagnetic hollow part attracting the peening elements which contact a portion of the internal surface of the non-ferromagnetic hollow part. The magnetic field is disengaged and a second magnetic dipole creates a second magnetic field, thereby causing the peening elements to contact a second portion of the internal surface. The magnetic dipoles are repeatedly turned on and off, thereby causing repeated impact within the interior of the hollow part until the internal surface attains a predetermined stress level.

    摘要: A hybrid airfoil for a gas turbine engine is provided that includes a body and a panel. The body has a first side and a second side orientated opposite the first side. The first and second sides extend between a tip, a base, a leading edge and a trailing edge. The body includes a plurality of cavities disposed in the first side of the body, which cavities extend inwardly toward the second side. The cavities collectively form an opening. At least one rib is disposed between the cavities. A shelf is disposed around the opening. The panel is attached to the shelf first mounting surface and to the rib, and is sized to enclose the opening. The panel is a load bearing structure operable to transfer loads to the body and receive loads from the body.

    摘要: A dimensionally stable structural joint particularly suited for use in space systems. The joint comprises a connector having at least two tubular sleeves, at least two tubular members, and at least two annular clamping means for securing the tubular members inside the connector. The connector comprises at least two elements, manufactured from a fiber reinforced composite, which, when mated, form the connector. The tubular members are manufactured from a material having a coefficient of axial expansion of substantially zero. The annular clamping means are manufactured from a material having substantially the same coefficient of radial expansion as the tubular members. The combination of the connector comprises at least two elements and the annular clamping means with substantially the same coefficient of radial expansion as the tubular members allows the joint to accommodate radial expansion and contraction while maintaining axial dimensional stability.

    摘要: In an air mixing arrangement wherein a primary fluid is introduced through an opening in a wall to be mixed with a secondary fluid flowing along the wall surface, the opening is airfoil shaped with its leading edge being orientated at an attack angle with respect to the secondary fluid flow stream so as to thereby enhance the penetration and dispersion of the primary fluid stream into the secondary fluid stream. The airfoil shaped opening is selectively positioned such that its angle of attack provides the desired lift to optimize the mixing of the two streams for the particular application. In one embodiment, a collar is provided around the opening to prevent the secondary fluid from contacting the surface of the wall during certain conditions of operation. Multiple openings maybe used such as the combination of a larger airfoil shaped opening with a smaller airfoil shaped opened positioned downstream thereof, or a round shaped opening placed upstream of an airfoil shaped opening. Pairs of openings and associated collars maybe placed in symmetric relationship so as to promote mixing in particular applications, and nozzles maybe placed on the inner side of wall to enhance the flow characteristics of the primary fluid.
