Abstract: A system for determining a temperature of an object includes a three-dimensional (3D) printer configured to successively deposit a first layer of material, a second layer of material, and a third layer of material to form the object. The 3D printer is configured to form a recess in the second layer of material. The material is a metal. The system also includes a temperature sensor configured to be positioned at least partially with the recess and to have the third layer deposited thereon. The temperature sensor is configured to measure a temperature of the first layer of material, the second layer of material, the third layer of material, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: A method of operating a printer repetitively merges a purge sheet into a media stream of a job stream in the printer so the controller of the printer can operate inactive inkjets and eject ink onto the purge sheet to maintain the operational status of the inactive inkjets. The purge sheet has a width that is at least the maximum width of a print zone in the printer in the cross-process direction and a length that is less than a length of any media sheet in the job stream in the process direction. The purge sheet is diverted through a duplex path in the printer to repetitively merge the purge sheet into the media stream of the job stream to maintain the operational status of the inactive inkjets.

Abstract: A printing system includes a pair of encoders to compensate for encoder noise in the velocity of a media transport as the transport moves past a plurality of printheads. One encoder monitors a roller that positioned at a location of low thermal stress and the signal generated by this encoder is used by a controller to maintain a constant velocity for the media transport. The second encoder monitors a roller used to drive the media transport and is positioned close to the print zone opposite the printheads. The signal from the second encoder is used to identify a corrected distance between each tic in the tics generated by the second encoder and the corrected distance is used to count a firing distance for generation of a dot clock signal to activate ejectors in a printhead when a substrate has traveled the firing distance.

Abstract: A method for determining a temperature of an object includes contacting the object with a first electrical conductor. A difference in electronegativity between the object and the first electrical conductor is greater than a predetermined value. The method also includes contacting the object or a substrate on which the object is positioned with a second electrical conductor. A difference in electronegativity between the object or the substrate and the second electrical conductor is less than the predetermined value. The method also includes connecting the first and second electrical conductors together. The method also includes measuring the temperature of the object using the first and second electrical conductors. The first and second electrical conductors form at least a portion of a thermocouple.

Abstract: An apparatus includes one or more layers of material printed by a three-dimensional (3D) printer. The one or more layers cool and solidify to form an object after being printed by the 3D printer. At least one of the one or more layers includes greater than 50% metal. The apparatus also includes a first temperature sensor in contact with the object. The first temperature sensor measures the temperature of the material while the object is being printed by the 3D printer, after the object has been printed by the 3D printer, or both.
