    摘要: A method for screening the quality of an optical component including the step of simulating the performance of the optical component. The step of simulating includes the step of measuring the optical phase &phgr; of the optical component, wherein the step of measuring comprises indirectly measuring the optical phase &phgr; of the optical component using a scanning laser having a scanning step size &Dgr;&ohgr; and a modulation frequency &ohgr;m such that &Dgr;&ohgr;/&ohgr;m≦2. The light throughput R of the optical component is then measured. A transfer function H as a function of optical frequency &ohgr; is constructed where H(&ohgr;)=R(&ohgr;)exp[j&phgr;(&ohgr;)], and the performance is simulated using the measured value of the optical phase and the light throughput into the transfer function.

    摘要: A double heterostructure semiconductor laser having the configuration of its optical cavity arranged to impose a constraint on the lasing filament as the spatial distribution of the lasing filament changes from that occuring at the start of the lasing regime, so that the optical flux emitted by the laser has self-saturating properties. This protects the laser from catastrophic facet erosion and enables a simpler control circuit to be used to drive this laser when it is used as a light source for an optical communications system.

    摘要: A tunable interferometer for creating gratings of variable periodicity in an optical waveguide is disclosed. The interferometer includes a beam splitter for producing first and second write beams from an input beam. First and second reflectors receive the first and second write beams, respectively, from the beam splitter and direct the first and second write beams to intersect at a fixed location. The angle of intersection of the first and second write beams is a function of impingement locations of the first and second write beams on the first and second reflectors.     摘要: A detection system for monitoring an engineered structure includes an array of sensors disposable in a predetermined pattern on the engineered structure and disposable between a surface of the engineered structure and a protective coating substantially covering the surface. The detection system also includes a data acquisition system in communication with the array of sensors for retrieving data from the sensors. The array of sensors can provide data corresponding to at least one of a degree of cure of the protective coating, a health of the cured protective coating, and a corrosion rate of the engineered structure at each of the sensors.
