A liquid crystal display realizes high resolution without enlarging a frame area of an array substrate in the display. The display connects analog switch pairs each consisting of a p-TFT and an n-TFT to signal lines, respectively. Among the TFTs, those having the same polarity and connected to adjacent signal lines are provided with drain electrodes that are connected to a video bus through a common contact hole. Sharing the contact holes among the TFTs enables the switch pairs to be juxtaposed at fine pixel pitches.

An array substrate includes a transparent electrode which applies a field to a liquid crystal layer, a light-shielding wiring pattern having one or more apertures which allow transmission of light incident on the liquid crystal layer from the reverse side of the array substrate, and a reflection member which reflects incident light applied from a counter substrate side through the liquid crystal layer.

The present invention relates to the structure of an active matrix type liquid crystal display device in which a channel length of a thin film transistor without increasing resistance of a scanning line region to improve a switching characteristic. A slit is formed at the channel of the thin film transistor formed on the scanning line region. The slit is used as a mask and a pattern of a channel protection film for determining the channel of the thin film transistor is formed by exposure form a back surface of a substrate. According to this method, a desirable channel length can be obtained, and the scanning line region, facing to the channel through the slit, functions as an auxiliary region, so that the resistance of the scanning line region can be reduced.

The reflective pixel electrode has a reflective surface in which a first undulation having a gradual inclined surface disposed in each pixel area and a second undulation having a plurality of convex portions as main scattering portions disposed in each pixel area are superimposed.

A liquid crystal display device includes a driving voltage supply line connected to a transfer pad through a contact hole. The contact hole is corroded under the open air in a prior art liquid crystal display device. According to the present invention, however, the contact hole is provided in an air tight place ranging from an edge portion of a display area through a sealing material, e.g., underneath the sealing material. With this structure the contact hole is not exposed to the open air so that its resistance to corrosion is significantly improved.

A liquid crystal display device includes a thin film transistor (TFT) array substrate 10, a counter substrate 22 provided opposite to the TFT array substrate 10 and a liquid crystal layer 28 held between the TFT array and counter substrates 10 and 22. The TFT array substrate 10 has display and frame areas 31 and 32. There are pixel electrodes in the display area 31 which each have reflective and transparent portions 33 and 34 with convex and concave portions 29 and 30, respectively. Convex and concave portions 36 and 37 are also provided in the frame area 32 which are substantially the same in shape as convex and concave portions 29 and 30 in the display area 31. The surface of a photoresist coating film in the display area 31 shown by a dotted line 39 is substantially the same in configuration as that in the frame area 32 to make the column-like spacers 27 and 38 substantially the same in height. A cell gap between the TFT array and counter substrates 10 and 22 is made thereby substantially uniform.

A liquid crystal display device has an array substrate and an opposite substrate arranged opposite to each other through a plurality of columnar spacers with a liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween. A plurality of wiring lines and coloring layers are provided over the array electrode. A frame pattern is formed on the array substrate at the outer side of the display area to prevent a light leakage at the outer peripheral edge of the display area. The frame pattern is so provided as to have a gap relative to the outermost peripheral side columnar spacers. At a gap between the frame pattern and the outermost peripheral side columnar spacers, a wiring line is provided with its portion formed in an overlapping relation to the frame pattern, thus blocking light.
