A switch over mechanism disconnects the sprocket and the shutter mechanism in response to rewinding the filmstrip and a locking mechanism prevents reverse rotation of the sprocket in a specific position.

A camera with a variable focus lens device, in which a lens position detecting device detects the focal length of the photographing lens from the amount of movement of a movable member that is capable of being rectilinearly advanced and retracted along the optical axis of the photographing lens, in order to provide an autofocusing function to accurately focus upon an object. Thus, the focal length can be detected in a simplified manner, and the influence of errors during assembly of the components of a photographing lens driving system can be minimized. A flare preventing mask effectively prevents flare occurrence in correspondence to variations in the position of the photographing lens. The lens retaining structure simplifies the assembly of the front lens group into a movable lens mount, and reduces the size and weight of the camera. A position sensor is coupled to the movable member which moves while maintaining a predetermined relation with the movement of the photographing lens, and the position of the photographing lens is detected from the amount of movement of the movable member. A key member prevents rotation of the movable lens mount and so allows the movable lens mount to be advanced or retracted a lesser distance than the movable lens mount. The flare preventing mask is mounted on the key member. A rear focusing type autofocusing mechanism is provided by inserting a holder retaining the front lens group into the movable lens mount from the front end of the lens mount.

When the panoramic size is designated, the masking mechanism partially masks an exposure aperture that otherwise would create a full size picture, thereby to form a panoramic picture. On a rear door of the camera are mounted first and second data recorders. When the full size is designated, the first data recorder records numerical data on the first picture and in a larger size. When the panoramic size is designated, the second data recorder records numerical data on the second picture and in a smaller size. The full-size data are positioned outside the area of the panoramic picture.

The light emitter applies the light to a light receiver of a line sensor confronting the light emitter. The line sensor sends a light-reception signal, which is outputted from the light receiver, to a lens-position controller. Positional information of the taking lens is obtained on the basis of the light-reception signal so that a position of the taking lens is accurately detected.

The cam portion is formed to have sloped surfaces inclined along a circumferential direction and these sloped surfaces are in contact with the cam followers. When the rotary barrel rotates, the cam followers shift in the optical axial direction along the sloped surfaces, thereby moving the second lens holder back and forth in the optical axial direction.

A drive pulse generator supplies the piezoelectric elements with a drive signal to expand or contract the piezoelectric elements, and moves the engageable barrel arm in an axial direction by an alternately repeating sequence of shifting the drive shaft at low and high speeds in the axial direction. In the shifting at the high speed, the piezoelectric elements shift the drive shaft in a backward direction quickly, to move the drive shaft in the backward direction relative to the engageable barrel arm being stationary with inertial force.
