An optical head apparatus consists of a light beam source, a blazed hologram partitioned into diffraction regions for mainly changing the light beam radiated from the light beam source to zero-order diffraction light and secondarily diffracting the light beam to produce beams of unnecessary light such as N-order diffraction light (N.noteq.0), an information medium for storing information, an objective lens for converging the zero-order diffraction light and the unnecessary light at the information medium, and a six-division photo detector having six detecting sections for detecting intensity of first-order diffraction light produced by diffracting the zero-order diffraction light in the blazed hologram. A hologram pattern of the blazed hologram is formed to function as a lens for the unnecessary light. A focus servo signal is produced according to mutual relation among intensities of the first-order diffraction light detected in the six detecting sections to focus the objective lens on the information medium For the zero-order diffraction light. Therefore, the objective lens is not focused on the information medium for the unnecessary light. Also, the beams of the unnecessary light diffracted in each of the diffraction regions of the blazed hologram are greatly widened because numerical apertures of the diffraction regions are small.

An optical pickup head apparatus comprising: a light source; an imaging optics for receiving a linearly polarized light beam emitted from the light source, and converges it on a small spot on an information medium; photodetector units for receiving the light beam being reflected and diffracted at the information medium and output electric signals corresponding to received light quantities; a liquid crystal hologram consisting of a pair of transparent substrates, a liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween through a pair of transparent electrodes, either of the transparent electrodes being formed with a hologram pattern; and a Faraday rotator for rotating a polarized direction of light beam by 45 degrees in a light path leading from the light source to the information medium and, further, rotates the polarized direction of the light beam by 45 degrees in its opposite light path. The liquid crystal hologram is applied a constant voltage so that the light beam reflected at the information medium is diffracted in the liquid crystal hologram to generate .+-.1-order diffraction light beams, and the photodetector units sense both of light quantities of said .+-.1-order diffraction light beams emitted from the liquid crystal hologram. Then, a subtraction between signals representing the light quantities is calculated so as to obtain an information signal.

Disclosed is a compact optical pick-up head apparatus suitable for mass-production, which comprises a light radiation source, an element composed of photodetector split into a plurality of regions and integrated on the same base, an objective lens for focusing a beam from the above source on an optical disk, a blazed hologram integrated to the support member of the lens, a means for driving the support member to which the objective lens and blazed hologram are integrated in response to an output as servo signal output from the photodetector which receives a diffracted beam produced in such a manner that a return beam reflected or diffracted by the optical disk is incident on the objective lens integrated with the above hologram. The optical pickup apparatus according to the present invention employs a region-split-type phase hologram in which a pair of Flesnel zone plate-like patterns, by which a plurality of diffraction wavefronts having a different focus and the same diffraction order are produced outside an optical-axis, are non-superimposedly formed. The above hologram can be blazed with a pinpoint accuracy by lithography using a few mask patterns synthesized by a computer, and further a more preferably blazing can be realized by the combination of the ion beam etching and the lithography. Accordingly, not only noise caused by an unnecessary diffracted beam component but also the offset of a servo signal can be restrained and the size of the objective lens can be reduced by the integration of the entire optical system, which greatly contributes to the superminiaturization of an optical head.

An optical head apparatus consists of a semiconductor laser for radiating a light beam, a first collimator lens for collimating the light beam, a wedge-like prism for reshaping the light beam, a beam splitter for transmitting the light beam in an outgoing path and splitting the light beam in an incoming path, an objective lens for converging the light beam at an information medium in which information is stored, a plane type of hologram lens integrally formed with the objective lens for excessively correcting chromatic aberration of the objective lens to cancel out chromatic aberration of the collimator lens, a second collimator lens for converging the light beam split, a photo detector for detecting intensity of the light beam converged to obtain an information signal and servo signals, and an actuating unit for slightly moving the objective lens and the hologram lens according to the servo signals. A wavelength of the light beam is lengthened as intensity of the light beam is increased. Even though an astigmatic difference occurs in the semiconductor laser, the change of a focal length of the collimator lens cancels out the change of the astigmatic difference to prevent the occurrence of astigmatic aberration.

By changing a voltage between the first voltage application electrode 13 and the first opposing electrode 17, a phase that converts plane waves into spherical waves is imparted on light that is incident on the first phase changing layer 15.
