A dielectric filter includes a single block made of dielectric material having three or more through holes in which an inner conductor is deposited to define three or more dielectric resonators coupled in a cascade manner. A reactance coupling arrangement is provided for coupling two spaced dielectric resonators with at least one dielectric resonator between them being skipped. By selecting the value of the reactance coupling arrangement, it is possible to provide a filter having a frequency characteristic in a desired format, including at least one pole at a selected point in an attenuation region thereof, without any increase in the number of stages of the dielectric resonators.

A dielectric filter comprises a cubic dielectric block in which a plurality of holes arranged in the longitudinal direction are formed vertically therethrough. On outer surfaces of the dielectric block, an outer conductor is formed except on the upper surface. On inner surfaces of a plurality of the holes, inner conductors constituting resonance elements in cooperation with the outer conductor are formed. Grooves are formed in the dielectric block between the adjacent resonance elements. Thereby, impedance of a part of a lengthwise direction of at least one of the adjacent resonance elements differs from that of the other part, at least in one of the even and odd modes. In order to have different impedances, notches may be formed on the dielectric block between the adjacent inner conductors or large and small diameter portions may be formed in the holes or further the two methods may be combined.

In a dielectric filter which has a plurality of dielectric resonators of a TM.sub.010 mode or its modified mode, each dielectric resonator has one dielectric solid body disposed in series with a metallic case having top and bottom faces and at least one side face. A conductive film is provided to form the actual current paths on the surface of the ceramic case, and a conductive plate is provided between the dielectric resonators to electrically connect the resonators with each other, whereby a given electro-magnetic combination is caused between the adjacent dielectric resonators so as to provide a dielectric filter having given characteristics.

The region of the dielectric substrate defined between the first and second electrodes, a free space defined between the first electrode and the first conductor plate and another free space defined between the second electrode and the second conductor plate are cut-off regions for attenuating a high-frequency signal having the same frequency as the resonance frequency. This dielectric resonator can be used in a millimeter wave band, can resonate with markedly small variations of its resonance frequency even if the temperature thereof varies, and can be manufactured at a low cost.
