    摘要: A wide viewing angle polarizing plate has a laminate of a birefringent film having an in-plane average phase difference of from 50 nm to 200 nm made of a transparent resin film having microscopic regions dispersed therein and a polarizing plate. The birefringent film comprises a transparent resin film having microscopic regions dispersed therein and satisfies the relationships &Dgr;n2≦0.03 and &Dgr;n1>&Dgr;n2 supposing that the direction of the axis along which linearly polarized light exhibits the maximum transmission is &Dgr;n2 direction, the difference in refractive index between microscopic regions in &Dgr;n2 direction and other portions is &Dgr;n2, the direction perpendicular to &Dgr;n2 direction is &Dgr;n1 direction and the difference in refractive index between microscopic regions in &Dgr;n1 direction and other portions is &Dgr;n1, and &Dgr;n1 direction and the retardation axis of said birefringent film and the transmission axis of said polarizing plate are parallel to each other and a liquid crystal display comprising same.

The optical film has a high transmittance and a high degree of polarization, can produce high contrast in a wide viewing angle range, and can suppress unevenness in transmittance during black viewing.

A retardation plate for forming a stereoscopic image has a plurality of first retardation regions and a plurality of second retardation regions in the same plane. The first retardation regions have an in-plane retardation of (¼+m)λ at a wavelength λ, and the second retardation regions have an in-plane retardation of (¾+n)λ at a wavelength λ, wherein m and n are each 0 or a natural number, preferably m=n=0. The first and second retardation regions have slow axis directions parallel to each other.

A method of manufacturing a polarizer includes a width direction stretching process for stretching a hydrophilic polymer film 1 in the width direction, which is continuously supplied, by gripping both ends in a width direction thereof with grip means 2 and moving the grip means 2 in a longitudinal direction of the film 1 as well as by bringing the film 1 into contact with liquid and also moving the grip means 2, which grips at least one of both ends in the width direction of the film 1, outwardly in the width direction of the film 1; and a dyeing process for dyeing the film 1 by a dichroic material. In the width direction stretching process, a contact with the liquid is carried out by at least one of spraying and coating of the liquid, and the width direction stretching process is carried out in at least one of the dyeing process and a process other than the dyeing process.

The retardation film is disposed so that the slow axis direction of the retardation film is substantially orthogonal to the absorption axis direction of the above polarizer.The optical laminated film of the present invention may increase contrast ratio in the case of being used for a liquid crystal display, for example.
