The disk drive includes a secondary actuator for positioning the transducer over a second range of movement, and a primary actuator for positioning the secondary actuator over a first range of movement that is larger than the second range of movement. The secondary actuator is controlled to move the transducer toward a target track on the disk while seeking. The primary actuator is controlled to move the secondary actuator toward the target track while simultaneously controlling the secondary actuator to maintain the transducer on the target track.

The servo controller tunes at least one microactuator feedforward value of the plurality of microactuator feedforward values. Compensation for disk mode disturbances during self-writing of servo data is provided in a manner that accounts for differences in orientation between the disk surface from which position information is derived and the disk surface on which servo data is written. Microactuators corresponding to upper surfaces of disks may have a wiring polarity that is out of phase with the wiring polarity of microactuators corresponding to upper surfaces of disks so that disk mode compensation signals supplied to the microactuators produce motion in opposite directions. The servo control system may supply signals to microactuators individually and select the polarities of those signals to account for differences in orientation between the disk surface from which position information is derived and the disk surface on which servo data is written.

A disk drive and method are provided for controlling seeking of a transducer that is adjacent to a rotatable data storage disk in a disk drive. The disk drive includes an actuator for positioning the transducer relative to the disk, the method comprising. The actuator is controlled to move the transducer toward a target track on the disk during an initial phase of a seek mode during which the transducer is primarily accelerated toward the target track. During a settle phase of the seek mode which follows the initial phase the actuator is controlled to settle the transducer onto the target track. An initial position, an initial velocity, and an initial acceleration of the transducer are determined at a phase switch time at about when control of the actuator switches from the initial phase to the settle phase of the seek mode. Feed-forward control information is generated based on the determined initial position, initial velocity, and initial acceleration of the transducer. The actuator is controlled responsive to the feed-forward control information to settle the transducer onto the target track during the settle phase of the seek mode.

The estimated deceleration current is compared to a maximum available deceleration current, and responsive to a determination that the current required to decelerate the transducer from the maximum deceleration point to the destination track exceeds the maximum available deceleration current, the estimated deceleration switching point is adjusted. When switching from a first head to a second head, features and aspects hereof assure that the second head will not be positioned in the zipper zone of the corresponding second surface and hence will not lose track following servo synchronization and control. In one aspect, added buffer or guard tracks having valid servo information but no data are added on either side of the zipper zone to assure that under the worst-case misalignment of surfaces the second head will not be positioned in its corresponding zipper zone when switching from the first head.

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for performing a self-servo write operation in a disk drive. In one embodiment, the disk drive includes a disk surface having a read head and a write head associated therewith. Spiral servo information is written onto the disk surface using a servo track writer. The read head reads the spiral servo information and is used to position the write head, which writes a small band of final servo information onto the disk surface. The small band of final servo information may be embedded servo information. Importantly, the small band of final servo information is not written using the servo track writer. The write head is also used to write self-servo write instructions into the small band of final servo information. Subsequently, the self-servo write instructions are read and a self-servo write operation is performed using the spiral servo information.
