Apparatuses and methods for wavelength selective switching and optical performance monitoring are provided. Spatially separated wavelength channels of an optical signal are directed onto an optical deflector array. The optical deflector array is configured so that each wavelength channel is incident on a respective region of the optical deflector array. The optical deflector array is controlled so that, for one or more of the wavelength channels: i) a first portion of the region of the optical deflector array upon which the wavelength channel is incident is configured to steer a first portion of the wavelength channel toward a switching output port; and ii) a second portion of the region is configured to steer a second portion of the wavelength channel toward a monitoring output port.

In wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, one optical multiplexing section (OMS) can support several channels. During a network reconfiguration, the number or channel index of the channels in the OMS may change, which may result in a change in gain for other channels in the OMS due to the channel loading dependant gain properties of many optical amplifiers. Equalization is therefore required in order to reduce power excursion for the channels in the OMS. Using a model for the channel loading dependent gain of optical amplifiers, equalization may be performed more quickly than using measurement-based equalization methods. The model predicts the change in gain for the channels in an OMS following network reconfiguration, and allows for an equalizer to quickly or pre-emptively adjust for the changes. This model may include an artificial neural network, which is trained using some of the possible channel loading conditions for the OMS.

Aspects of the present application provide an optical interconnecting network architecture. The architecture involves a central node coupled to multiple access nodes (ANs), in which the central node includes a pair of optical couplers used to combine optical signals received from the ANs and broadcast the combined optical signals to all destination ANs. A coherent detection receiver in each of the ANs receives the combined optical signals and selectively detects a wavelength carrying the optical signal assigned to that AN by tuning a local oscillator (LO) wavelength of the coherent detection receiver.

An example apparatus may include a first optical path having a first tunable component and a second optical path having a second tunable component. The apparatus may also include a first switch component for selectively connecting the first optical path to an output, and a second switch component for selectively connecting the second optical path to the output. The first and second switch components may be semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The apparatus may have a controller that controls the first switch component and the second switch component to select which optical path is connected to the output and controls tuning of the tunable component in the optical path that is not connected to the output.

The present disclosure includes methods and systems in which idle tones are added at an ingress and terminated at an egress of a given fiberoptic communication link between ROADM nodes. An equalization process can be performed across the spectrum of available wavelength channels and then a determination can be made of a number of channels that can be added or dropped at a given time that meet a maximum threshold for change in power of the channels in the available wavelength. As channels without information-carrying signals are filled with idle tones, the stability of the optical system can be improved as there is less variability in power change when all of the channels have a substantially similar nominal power and a signal on one or more of those channels are added or removed.

Systems and methods for performing wavelength conflict detection are provided. These are to detect situations in optical networks where two instances of the same wavelength channel have been added. Wavelength conflict detection is performed for each of a plurality of possible wavelength channels that could be present in an optical signal, each wavelength channel that is present modulated by a pilot tone signal with a respective pilot tone frequency, the pilot tone signal carrying M-ary pilot tone data, M=2n, n≧1, with a respective one of M different sequences being used to represent each of M possible data values over a data value period. Conflict detection for each wavelength channel involves performing correlation peak detection using each of the M different sequences to determine correlation peaks for each of the M different sequences, and, based on the determined correlation peaks, determining whether multiple instances of the wavelength channel are present in the optical signal.

Methods and apparatus are provided that configure a wider passband for one or more channels of a wavelength selective switch (WSS). When a wider passband route WSS and a normal width passband select switch are used in combination, crosstalk that may be introduced by the wider passband route WSS can be mitigated. The wider passband WSS can provide a passband that allows a maximum bandwidth of signal to pass on a given channel and avoid signal being attenuated at the channel edges, especially when channels have a reduced channel spacing, such as with 50 GHz spacing.

The signal processor is configured for processing the electrical signal to obtain a frequency offset of the sub-channel; and adjusting an optical frequency of the modulated light based on the frequency offset. When applied to a multiple-access environment, this may allow access nodes to generate optical sub-channels in the uplink direction using the downlink optical signal as an optical frequency reference.
