摘要: A unitary device for the treatment and collection of blood from two different sources during a surgical procedure comprises a hollow housing made of a rigid, preferably transparent, material, first and second blood inlets in the housing, a first blood treatment element inside the housing comprising a layer of porous defoaming material and a layer of non-woven depth filter material, and a second blood treatment element inside the housing comprising a layer of porous defoaming material and free of any depth filter material. The novel device also includes internal walls for providing two blood flow paths therein, one through the first inlet, the first blood treatment element, a blood collection reservoir defined within the device and a treated blood outlet in the bottom wall of the housing, and the other through the second inlet, the second blood treatment element, the blood collection reservoir and the blood outlet. The latter blood flow path bypasses at least the depth filter material layer of the first blood treatment element. In typical use in an extracorporeal flow circuit, cardiotomy blood is introduced to the first inlet, venous return blood is introduced to the second inlet and the common blood outlet is connected to an extracorporeal blood pump. As a result, passage of the relatively clean venous return blood through a depth filter material is avoided.

摘要: A blood oxygenator for one time use and discard in medical procedures. The blood oxygenator has a unitary transparent sealed vessel with first and second blood treating stages arranged for series flow. The first stage receives an inflow of blood and oxygen and it has integrated oxygenating and heat exchanging elements that include a plurality of vertical ribs and flutes internested to provide upright thin-film blood and oxygen flow channels. These ribs and flutes surround, by a common wall, a heat exchanger with upright channels for counter-directional coolant flow relative to the blood and oxygen flow. The second stage has integrated blood degassing and defoaming elements including a vertical perforated wall surrounded by a porous foam member with a surrounding reservoir of outflowing degassed and defoamed blood and a vent for free oxygen gas.

摘要: A blood oxygenating device having an oxygenating chamber and a heat exchange chamber. The oxygenating chamber consists of a bubbler chamber and a mixing chamber. Oxygen is introduced into the bubbler chamber through a porous diffusion means situated near the inlet of the bubbler chamber. Bubbles pass from the bubbler chamber into a mixing chamber which is provided with a plurality of secondary flow-producing deflectors to promote secondary flow of blood bubbles passing therethrough. The secondary flow results in a highly efficient oxygen-carbon dioxide transfer. The blood bubbles are then passed through a heat exchange chamber and a defoaming means prior to exiting the oxygenating device.

摘要: A blood oxygenating device comprising an oxygenating chamber and a heat exchange chamber, the oxygenating chamber comprising a bubbler chamber and a mixing chamber. Oxygen is introduced into the bubbler chamber through a porous diffusion means situated near the inlet of the bubbler chamber. Bubbles pass from the bubbler chamber into the mixing chamber which is provided with a plurality of secondary flow-producing deflectors to promote secondary flow and rotation of blood bubbles passing therethrough. The secondary flow results in a highly efficient oxygen-carbon dioxide transfer. The blood bubbles are then passed through a heat exchange chamber and a defoaming means prior to exiting the oxygenating device.In a preferred version, blood and oxygen-rich gas are admitted at the top of the device and caused to flow substantially downwardly through a tortuous path which causes at least a portion of the blood bubbles to rotate. During the course of downward flow, the blood-gas-bubble mixture passes around a heat exchange device, which preferably is convoluted, helically wound tubing so as to form the tortuous path, to bring the blood to a desired temperature. The oxygenator is equipped with a defoaming means such that the blood bubbles are converted back into liquid blood, which is then returned to the patient. Vent means are provided for removal of carbon dioxide and other vent gases. Means for promoting secondary flow in the blood are preferably provided in the upward region of the oxygenator.

摘要: A blood reservoir comprises a rigid casing and a perforated tubular member positioned within the casing and extending between the edges thereof. An inlet aperture is at a position at the upper end of the reservoir in communication with the bore of the tubular member while an outlet aperture is positioned adjacent the bottom of the casing exterior to the tubular member. The bore of the tubular member contains first blood-defoaming means, and the tubular member carries a blood filter. In accordance with this invention, second blood defoaming means are positioned about the exterior of the tubular member to dissipate the fine bubbles without interference from the larger bubbles, which have been previously removed by passage through the first blood defoaming means.
