摘要: An interrogator for remotely interrogating an internal counter of a scoliosis treatment device. An internal counter of the treatment device is incremented for those periods of time in which the treatment level of the device is in excess of a compliance level. The interrogator communicates with the internal counter by means of two serial data lines. On one data line the interrogator generates a clock signal to the internal counter for incrementing the device and on the other data line the interrogator receives a pulse indicating the internal counter has overflowed. By incrementing the internal counter through a full cycle of its maximum count the counter will retain the count present when it is interrogated. Additionally, by counting the number of, clock counts comprising the period from the overflow signal to the end of a full cycle a duplication of the count in the remote internal counter can be stored in the interrogator and subsequently displayed.

摘要: This disclosure is directed to an improved method of correction of spinal curvature deficiencies such as scoliosis, lordosis, kyphosis and combinations thereof, utilizing transcutaneous, percutaneous or subcutaneous electrical muscle stimulation of certain target musculature. The improvements reside in the use first of techniques (preferably thermographic) to define pairs of non-overlapping sites of muscle contraction (when electrically stimulated by a predetermined electrical pulse pattern) which sites of muscle contraction surround the reference center or apex of the major curvature to be corrected. Following selection of the muscle sites, one supplies electrical muscle stimulation to each of the muscle sites to be contracted, on an alternating basis, the net effect of which is that the muscle sites jointly apply a corrective force on a constant basis while, at the same time, each said muscle site has a rest period between each stimulation period. Each muscle site is not affected by the electrical stimulation of the other site. The method for applying dual channel alternating stimulation of target muscle sites, which are non-overlapping during stimulation, results in a constant force being applied on the curvature to be reduced without the muscle fatigue which would normally be associated with stimulation of a single muscle site on a constant basis. It appears that the treatment using the above-described techniques of dualchannel alternating stimulation of separate muscle sites which are first carefully defined, as by thermographic mapping, is a substantially more efficient way of hastening reduction of scoliotic, and other spinal, curvature deficiencies.

摘要: A system for the electrical treatment of spinal curvature through the exercise of selected spinal muscles. A probe having a blunt, muscle-penetrating tip is fitted with a sleeve such that its tip extends from the sleeve. A helical electrode is mounted on an elongated tool capable of imparting a rotational force to the electrode while allowing a disengagement with the electrode in the direction of its longitudinal axis. The probe is inserted in the paraspinal muscles and is removed while leaving the sleeve within the muscle. The electrode-tool assembly is inserted through the sleeve and the electrode secured in the paraspinal muscles by a rotational force applied to the tool. After electrode securement, the tool is withdrawn from the sleeve and the sleeve withdrawn from the muscle leaving the electrode secured within the muscle. Needle electrodes may be employed to stimulate the paraspinal muscles at several sites to establish those sites at which the induced muscle contraction provides maximum correction of the spinal curvature and the blunt probe tip may be provided with an electrode for muscle stimulation at varied penetration depths to establish the optimum depth for securement of the helical electrode. The electrodes are connected by leads to a receiver circuit implantable beneath the patient's skin and operable to receive RF modulated stimulation impulses transmitted through the skin. The impulses are developed by a patient operated RF transmitter with a cyclic on and off stimulation and rest periods so that stimulation of the muscles may take place while the patient relaxes or sleeps.

摘要: A method and apparatus for treatment of spinal deformities, for example, scoliosis, in which a muscle stimulator (pulse generator) is used to apply a preferred form of stimulating impulses to a patient so as to involuntarily cause contraction of particular selected trunk muscle groups to thereby effect a curvature correcting movement of selected spinal vertebrae while minimizing undesirable side effects, such as muscle fatigue. A first integrated circuit timer establishes a selectively variable "on-time" for a burst of pulses while a second such timer sets the "off-time" or interval between bursts. The individual pulses in the burst are initially of narrow width, but succeeding pulses in the group are of increasing width up to a predetermined maximum which maximum level is maintained for a desired time ("hold-time") prior to the termination of the burst. In an alternative embodiment, the stimulating impulses may be gradually decreased in width immediately prior to the pulse generator's effective "off-time". It has been determined that this pattern of stimulating pulses, when applied via body contacting electrodes positioned proximate the trunk muscle groups judiciously selected and determined by observations of the spinal curve to be corrected, has particular efficacy in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and combinations thereof.

摘要: An improved muscle stimulator, particularly suited to long term rhythmic stimulation for the selective development of musculature otherwise asymmetric or retarded in relative development. To minimize the subjects' awareness of stimulation, to permit nocturnal use, and to minimize battery consumption, the energy content of each pulse train is modulated by a progressive increase of pulse width up to a maximum, followed by a progressive decrease of pulse width, thus yielding a gradual contraction and relaxation of the muscle.

摘要: A system for maintaining a desired spinal curvature of a user suffering from improper alignment of the vertebrae of the spine. In it's broad aspects, it comprises a sensor feedback system and electrodes. The sensor feedback system measures spinal curvature, determines whether selected conditions have been met warranting the application of electrical stimulation and provides information regarding the determination to an electronic stimulator. The electrodes are spaceably mounted on selected portions of the user's back. They are in electrical communication with the electronic stimulator for causing contraction of the back muscles at selected levels, thus providing alignment of the spinal vertebrae. The sensor feedback system includes a sensor assembly which comprises an upper elongated rigid segment, a lower elongated rigid segment and a sensor. The upper elongated rigid segment is positionable adjacent the user's upper spine. The lower elongated rigid segment is positionable adjacent the posterior pelvic region. The sensor is mounted on a flexible middle segment between the upper segment and the lower segment. The sensor is so positioned as to measure lordosis.

摘要: The apparatus for electrical stimulation is more particularly adapted for the treatment of scoliosis and comprises an electrical circuit which delivers individual pulses having a duration of about 1 ms, an amplitude of about 150 V, a constant current intensity of about 75 mA and a frequency of 100 Hz as well as series of pulses with rising amplitude and a ramp up phase of about 2 s, followed by holding phase of about 2 s and a time off between two series of pulses of about 10 s. The apparatus further comprises three channels, whereby the first channel is applied on the side of the curvature, the second channel on the side of the counter curvature and the third channel on the abdominal musculature, whereby all channels are fed simultaneously.
