The system includes an object embedded with a unique identification code (UID), a movement module, and a distinct pattern of capacitive tabs near the surface of the object that makes contact with the interactive surface, an interactive surface configured to recognize the UID, location and orientation information of an object placed on the interactive surface, and a processor operatively linked to the interactive surface and configured to direct, track and correct the movement of the object along a defined path on the interactive surface by tracking the UID, location and orientation of the object continuously and throughout the movement. A centralized control mode is applied in the present invention, which makes the structure of the electronic hardware within the moving object substantially simplified, which leads to a decreased manufacturing cost, and, from an aesthetic point of view, the logic clearer and easily understood.

Embodiments of the invention provide a method and apparatus for moving a gamepiece in an electronic game where gamepieces are moved by user movement of devices. For example, cell phones may be used to control gamepiece movement on a table top or other surface. Each user moves their respective cell phone to control the movement of their gamepiece. Other user controls can be used to provide additional interaction. One embodiment discloses a tank game where each user operates a tank that is used to shoot at other user gamepieces in real time as the users move about a table top surface. A board wargaming hobbyist's tool constructed of .22-.25″ thick plexiglass, consisting of two 1″×¾″ beveled flanges glued on a 1-½″ square base. Either a self-adhesive felt or high-density foam piece is affixed to the bottom to provide scratch protection and to add color to the piece (not part of functionality). When used with a hobby knife it allows up to 10 cardboard counters (square game pieces) to be stacked with ragged corners protruding through the bevels, so that they can be trimmed off quickly and consistently. This greatly decreases preparation time of game pieces.
