A method for setting up a lithographic printing press is provided which reduces the make-ready time of on-press developable printing plates so that less copies are wasted. The method uses an ‘ink boost’ at the startup of the press by presetting the inking system to a configuration whereby the amount of ink supplied to the plate is different from the amount prescribed by standard printing conditions. The ink boost can be positive or negative and can be made dependent on the difference in the image coverage between plates used in successive print jobs or on different paper types used in successive print jobs.

A method controls the coloring of a printing press. In the method a test element is printed with a number of colored measuring areas. The printed colored measuring areas of the test element are then measured. Actual colorimetric values are calculated from the measured color values and then displayed. Reference colorimetric values are entered and adapted spectral color values are calculated. Densitometric, colorimetric, or spectral actual tonal values or actual tonal value gains are determined from the calculated actual colorimetric values of a subset of the colored areas of the test element. The densitometric, colorimetric or spectral reference tonal values or the reference tonal value gains are entered and adapted spectral color values are calculated by a comparison with the calculated actual colorimetric values. The adapted spectral color values for the calculation of color profiles, process calibrations and process control values are stored and the printing press is activated.

Opening amounts (θ1b-θnb) of the ink fountain keys (4-1-4-n) corresponding to the image of the printing plate (7′) of a next print job are corrected by correction values (Δθ1-Δθn) to obtain corrected opening amounts (θ1b′-θnb′). In a state in which ink in an ink roller group (6) has been decreased by scraping and removing it by an ink scraper blade (15) and in a state in which the opening amounts of the ink fountain keys (4-1-4-n) have been set to the corrected opening amounts (θ1b′-θnb′), an ink film thickness distribution corresponding to the image of the printing plate of the next print job is formed on the ink roller group (6).
