A rail car door closer is shown for hopper type rail cars used to carry bulk commodities or materials. Cylinders provide horizontal motion to rotate an axle on which cam closers are attached thereto. The cam closers operate between a relaxed position (down position) and a raised position (up position). During rotation of the cam closers from the relaxed position to the raised position, the cam closers push hopper doors under the rail car up to a latched position. Individual hopper doors can be closed, or multiple doors can be simultaneously closed, depending on the preference of the operator. The cylinders are protected from falling bulk commodities by an elongated tent frame structure.

An extending chuck assembly may be provided with the ability to operate gates in bottom-discharging railcars. The system uses a single self-propelled carriage with an on-board carriage drive system that includes a drive motor which operates the car along a fixed chain situated along a guideway. A generally horizontally disposed, laterally extendable pin car-engaging assembly is mounted on the car-moving carriage for aligning with and engaging a hook loop on a railcar for moving the car. A gate-operating assembly which includes a laterally extendable chuck system which aligns with, engages and rotates gate-operating capstans on bottom discharging railcars may also be provided.

The system includes an actuating device which is mounted on the surface adjacent the railroad tracks, and a mechanism mounted on the railcar which is contacted by the actuating device as the railcar rolls past the device. A first lever of the mechanism contacts an arm of the actuating device to open the hopper doors, while a second lever contacts the arm to close the hopper doors. The operation is accomplished without the use of powered cylinders or valves. The system can be used with railcars having either transverse hopper doors or longitudinal hopper doors.

A system for closing rail car doors that enables the simultaneous closing of multiple car doors is disclosed. After hopper car contents such as aggregate or coal are unloaded, the doors are closed in pairs by semi-automated door closing arms operated by hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic cylinders, or electric motors. The closing arms are configured in specific shapes to adapt to the style of hopper door. The closing arms may be added in pairs depending on the number of doors. The door closer can be sequenced to accommodate frontward or rearward facing doors. Hydraulic cylinders with a differential bell crank can be used to activate the closer arm assemblies. Closer arms can be mounted side by side on the inside or outside of the track or separately inside and outside of the track.

A low profile parallel railcar discharge adaptor is designed for connection between a discharge gate of a center discharge railroad hopper car and a pneumatic conveyor for unloading pulverulent and granular material, such as sugar and the like, from the car. The adaptor includes low profile, parallel double airlocks in a single housing mounted on a frame with an attached pair of main wheels, each of which is attached to a hydraulic jack. The frame includes members which perform the dual function of support and air passage, thus helping to minimize the profile height of the adaptor. A handle is connected to the adaptor frame, extending therefrom upward at an angle and terminating in a comfortable operating position. A pair of drive motors and a corresponding pair of gear housings are attached to the handle, with each drive motor and gear driving a respective one of the rotary airlocks via an angled universal joint. A control for the hydraulic jacks is located on the handle proximate a handle grip.

An airlift railcar discharge adaptor is designed for connection to a railroad car discharge opening for unloading pulverulent and granular material from the car. The adaptor includes a discharge chute and a discharge inlet mounted with a pair of wheels providing support and mobility. The wheels can be swiveled to allow precise maneuvering of the adaptor. A horizontally oriented rectangular discharge inlet connects with the chute and is adapted to be connected to the discharge outlet of the railroad car. A handle is connected to the adaptor. Each wheel is connected to a respective bell crank, which is, in turn, connected to a respective pneumatically operated cylinder. Each pneumatic cylinder is connected to an independent lever control conveniently positioned proximate the adaptor handle. The adaptor can be raised and lowered by manipulating the levers, each of which is connected to a three-way valve for charging the associated pneumatic cylinder. The adaptor can be moved, maneuvered, raised and lowered by a single workman from a standing position.

A positioning system for remote operation of hopper doors of a railway car is provided including a radio frequency controller and a hydraulic drive system. The positioning system for each hopper car is supplied with pneumatic power from the locomotive. Pneumatic power is converted to electric power for the controller and hydraulic power for the door drives. The electrical power is a 12 volt DC system provide by a standard battery, which is charged by an alternator driven by an air motor. An air operated hydraulic pump is also connected to the pneumatic power source to supply hydraulic pressure to a valve manifold connected to a series of solenoid operated hydraulic valves. The solenoid operated hydraulic valves are, in turn, connected to hydraulic cylinders which operate doors on railway hopper/ballast or other type cars. The controller includes a receiver for receiving signals from a remote transmitter and operator station. The controller processes the signals and transmits control signals to the solenoid control valve, which causes the cylinders to open or close the desired door.
